Memories of a special Christmas tree

When our boys were very young we lived in Ravensthorpe in Western Australia. It is a small country town which has gone from boom to bust several times following the fortunes and misfortunes of various mining companies. We lived in the town but a few miles out of town one early December someone put a few Christmas decorations on a small tree which was on the side of the road. This was very intriguing as whoever did it wasn’t admitting to it. It seemed a really lovely idea so a few nights later we took our boys and the neighbours’ kids and drove out to the tree. We put a whole lot more tinsel on the tree and drove home again. And perhaps surprisingly, we told no-one what we’d done. At least it gave the town something to talk about. Driving along the road at night the tinsel sparkled in the headlights. We’ve always thought it would be nice to do again but we’ve never been able to find a small enough tree close enough to the road but where it was safe to do it. I have a snapshot of it somewhere but I’d have to find it then scan it so I’ll just add one of my favourite wildflower photos. It’s one of the sundew family and is insectivorous.

The genus name is Drosera and I think this one is Drosera trinervia. It grows wild in the bush behind our place.

@sofssu I very much doubt that it is for sale. I don't think they sell it in Australia but perhaps they do.

I've seen a decorated tree in a forest. Someone may have celebrated an open-air Christmas there.

You mean someone placed that small Christmas tree so the people nearby can contribute with their time and resources in putting their owns decors? Oh , that is so nice. That picture of the wildflower is so nice. I thought it a part of a Christmas tree with those raindroplets decors. So,beautiful wildflower!

The tree was just naturally on the side of the road. It wasn't put there specially. Someone put a few streamers on it then we added more.

Our Mayor this year has decided to place 4 big trees in the 4 main areas of our small village and let local people to decorate the tree. I am crafting something so that I can decorate.

@judyev it’s quite trendy to stick lights on a tree in one’s garden here and annoy the neighbours with all the flashing and twinkling but I’ve never seen a tree in the countryside so festooned.

That is huge here too and some spend most of the year preparing their outside decorations. Then people drive round looking at all the lights and drive all the busy drivers frantic by their slowness.

Travellers would mention when they stopped for fuel or a meal or whatever but no-one could say who'd done it. It was our little secret.

It is a really lovely photo. I've seen other photos of this plant but none captures the dewdrops although they are more likely a sticky substance that captures and holds insects.

I don't know who started it but we left the next year. It's possible the tree got bulldozed as it got bigger. We always planned to do it again somewhere but could never find a suitable spot.
