It seems we are considered a risk but we now have the all-clear

So we were sitting at our computers minding our own business and there’s a knock on the door. It’s two very pleasant police officers, young enough to be our grandsons. They want to check our firearm cabinet as we are apparently considered ‘a risk’, being over 70 and all that. In Australia, rifles are required to be registered. They must be kept in a locked cabinet which must be bolted with two bolts to something immovable. Our gun cabinet is in the shed and bolted through to the cement floor and into the wall as well. The keys are in the house so we conform to all the rules. It would be a bit of a challenge for thieves to even get to the cabinet what with the bits and pieces that are often placed in front of it. However the young men were quite happy with their inspection and have gone on their way. While they were in the shed with Vince, I took a photo of their nice police-car. I might need it one day for a post. In fact, I’ll use it here.

Vince and I are getting up there now. No wonder we need hearing aids and I keep repeating things, repeating things.

It's nice that a few here think I'm younger. Sad it's not true.

I think we have similar rules in the UK, but rifles are harder to come by. I got rid of my shotgun before they tightened up safe keeping rules

Vince handed in his but these belonged to my parents. We might need to put an injured roo down one day I guess but really we should probably hand them in.

It's the same in the UK. We also had to have special door locks to the outside of our house and a police check every now and then.

@JudyEv Yes, we had to get a new lock put onto our back door and have all of our other locks checked too.

My Great room is currently a construction zone and has been for a couple of months now. If any their can get through it and not cause themselves grave injury I'd be impressed. To get anywhere in this house it's necessary to go through the Great room. The current state of disarray is driving me batty, but it's an excellent anti theft measure (and is causing my children to talk more seriously about moving out).

@SophiaMorros Maybe that is the answer. YOU move out and leave the rest of them to it!

i'm chuckling at some of the responses here. so when did you last use the rifles and what do you use them for? i'm not a car person but i like the car, too. i mean, not over-the-top like lamborghinis! the policemen, though - were they cute?

They were pretty cute so I gave them my best smile. There is an air-rifle which was last used to let some older children take pot-shots at cans. The others are .22s and we'd really only need them to put down a kangaroo or other animal that was badly injured. I am tempted to try shooting some of the rabbits that are becoming so prolific but I doubt I'll ever bother with it. Mostly they are kept for sentimental reasons I guess.

We made sure we did the right thing when we installed the cabinet. It just made sense and you never know when they might want to make an inspection.

They had to perform their duties. They probably already know, you and Vince are law abiding citizens. The young men wanted to know if the rifles were at risk of being stolen.

It's strange how you wonder if you have done something wrong and you've been targeted. It must be that ingrained respect for, almost fear of, the police and other authorities.

We obeyed the rules when we installed it but a visit from police is always a bit worrying. At least for us oldies it is as we were brought up to have a very healthy respect for them.

In my opinion it is so good that they visited you to check if everything was in order with the rifles and stuff. Every now and then it's nice to see officers around checking things out to make sure if it's all good. I am glad that you passed the checking. Nice picture by the way, I am so impressed by the beautiful trees that surround your place. I wish it was like that in my neighborhood! Lucky you!

We are very lucky with where we live. The bush you see is the natural bush and our boundary is the fence in front of it. We have 18 acres here with bush on two sides and some natural bush on our property as well. I'll add an aerial photo of our place. The dark green on the top left and right is the bush. All the rest is our property with the house tucked up in the corner.
