Proof that the burden of marriage has been well.. a burden for a long long time

"Sister Bachhof brought Sister Graff an affirmative answer to the proposal that she should marry Brother George Schmidt." This was written on January 7th of 1780. Now, I am assuming this is in line with the beliefs of the Moravian's. I forget the term for it, and perhaps I'll find the term later and edit this then, but it's essentially a "drawing of straws" as a means of divination. The Elders of the church would write "yes', "no", and then leave a blank sheaf of paper. The blank sheaf of paper signified that it wasn't the right question or should be left altogether along. This was how things like occupation and marriage was decided for the Moravians in this time period. On the 11th of that same year Sister Graff went back to Sister Bachhof and refused to marry the aforementioned Brother Schmidt. (To clarify, brother and sister do not signify being kin) She would come back the next day and say "well, maybe I will marry him." Now whether they actually did marry, I'll have to find out. *Reading Town Hall minutes and journal entries for the Historic Settlement of Salem, NC, A Moravian Settlement.* *Expect more of these little tidbits.

My sister and I went to visit old Bethabara a couple of months back. The Moravian influence on Forsyth County's history is fascinating (as is the Quaker influence on Guilford).

I have been past Bethabara recently but I haven't been in it for years. I've been learning or re-learning in some cases, things about the formation of Forsyth recently. Did you know that Salem was once part of Surry? I knew that where Old Salem is was once a part of Rowan county but apparently it was also a part of Surry and Stokes for a brief time as well. I've been online scouring the town hall minutes from Salem.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I'm still pretty much a new-comer to this area so most of the local history I run across is new to me.

@SophiaMorros My family has lived here since the 50's, but we're actually from Western NC (Asheville, Black Mountain area). When I was in school, especially in elementary, we went to Old Salem and Bethabara for field trips.

Is this a series from a book you are reading? Marriage is obligation definitely. Not a path everyone should follow.

@yoalldudes I am referring to a settlement of Moravians in my area. If you look up "Old Salem Museum and Gardens" you'll see to what I refer.

I have read something of the Salem Diaries about this old story, I would even say that this is an excerpt from The Salem Diary BRIEF ITEMS OF INTERST FROM THE SALEM DIARY translated from German to English and published in the 1960’s by the NC Department of Archives and History.

Well, I am sure I'll be boring people with more of this. I don't know why but I got a wild hair about me today and wanted to research this stuff. I've been to the place (now a living museum) so many times as a child, and a few times as a young adult. I haven't been back in over a decade.

That Sister Graff sounds a bit of a tease.

Some parts make me laugh a little. Like, one person brought up that people were drinking a little too much and that maybe a stop should be put to that. Look, if I had to live in the 1700's and in a somewhat oppressing settlement? I would probably want to drink a little to.
