hair cut for only 76 cents

i got impatient with my wavy, slow-growing hair again so i had a haircut again several weeks ago. the first salon had no change for big bills, while the second and third were gone, replaced by other businesses. but no worries. beauty parlors (as we used to call them) are plentiful here, and there it was, a new salon at the corner that i don't remember seeing before. they only charge 40 pesos (about 76 us cents) for a cut and blowdry. maybe it's their opening price promo to attract and retain customers because they're new. my usual tip at salons and spas (for body massages and waxing) is 50 pesos (about 95 cents). so my tip was actually more than what they charge for the cut and blowdry. tipping is optional here, so there is no fixed/required percentage. what can you buy with 50 pesos? well, a cup of kanin (steamed rice) and ulam (viand), for example, a chicken or pork dish, for lunch or dinner. or a kilo of bigas (rice grains/raw rice). what i don't like about spas and salons nowadays, though, is their staff trying to push other services. they keep urging you to try this or that. when i get a haircut, i borrow and read their magazines, even if they're old and tattered. when i get a massage, i want to let my mind wander, not listen to other services. i divert them by ask them about their work or family. sometimes they share anecdotes about their customers.

Here the cheapest salons charge about $20 for a haircut, but in most cases we have to pay much more than that. I don't usually visit the salons. My mother or my husband cut my hair.

@hereandthere @LadyDuck My husband's hair is very easy to cut because it is really short. My own hair is also very short at the moment, they are both easy to cut, so we help eachother.

I used to have my haircut at an air-conditioned barber shop which charged 80 pesos. I give the change for my 100 as tip to the barber. When the shop was suddenly padplocked by the building owner's daughter due to a rift with her father (they even filed cases against each other), I followed my usual barber to another shop which was not air-conditioned and only charged 60. I still gave the change for my 100 to the barber. When the barber transferred to another shop which charged 40, I also gave the change to my 100 to him so he got more than what the shop earned. I got pissed because my usual barber comes late so I just have my hair cut by another barber in the shop to whom I still give the change.

i'm not loyal to any beauty parlor, but i get upset when the spas i go to have massages would suddenly close. thankfully, like salons, spas are also plentiful now, so it's easy to find another one, but the nearer, the better, of course. sometimes i wonder which is better, filing cases so they are decided on legally, or letting family issues and resentments fester for generations and resorting to one-upmanship.

@hereandthere I prefer to have a barber who is already familiar with my hair because if cut a bit shorter, my hairs stand LOL!

I also ask about the salon girl whenever i get a haircut. Here a nice salon offers it for 99 pesos, with a blow dry. As to my tip, i just give 20 pesos because anyway they have a certian percentage for every haircut or service they give.

I would be afraid to pay only this. In the countryside you can get a hair cut for 10 Euros ($12) in France, but for this price you get a razor cut with very short hair. In cities hairdressers are more civilized, but they ask the double for a hair cut, about $25.

@hereandthere Any job needs a diploma in France, but when it comes to hairdressers it is a good question, as there are 2 diplomas. The lower one needs two years of studies mixed with training in a hairdresser salon, and the other 3 years of studies+1 year of work in a hairdresser salon. People having the lower one can open a salon in places with less than 2000 inhabitants only, while people having the upper one can open a salon wherever they want. So, although you may find good hairdressers in small villages, they are often less good than in towns/cities.

@hereandthere No female hair cut is way more expensive. No tips are expected as the price is inclusive of everything but you are welcome to give them any extra amount that you feel like in the tip jar.

Sometimes it can be annoying but they probably need to earn extra or are expected by mgmt to push other services. I have a regular barber, one I've had for over 5 years now.

A woman saloon is expensive here, you must be ready to spend $25 for a cut, $20 for men. I cut my hair and the hair of my husband. I just cut his hair this morning.

My haircut or trim costs me $12 now but most salons here would charge $40 to $50 dollars. I think this is much too much for a simple trim. Luckily we aren't expected to tip as well.

there was a time some salon chains did that - one price for just a trim, a higher price for a new hairstyle.
