Charlie Caught His First Bird

Charlie, our one year old kitty, is a hunter. He has been watching the birds around our place for a month or so now, eyeing them up, creeping, crawling, getting ready to pounce. Now he seems to have put all the watching to use, for his own benefit. The other day he came running into the house, straight through one door and out the other, a squawking sparrow in his mouth. By the time I went after him the poor wee bird had died of fright and lay on the garage floor at Charlie's feet. Poor cat, once the bird stopped moving he lost interest and was unsure what to do with it. He looked up at me waiting for praise and probably didn't expect the growling he received and the removal of his prize. It's hard to growl at a cat for catching a bird though, they're just doing what comes natural to them. New Zealand cats are outdoor creatures, unlike in some countries, and spend time both indoors and out. It's summer here now and birds are plentiful. There's really no way we can stop his hunting instinct.

The Kitten BUBI
Cats are outdoor creatures also here in Switzerland. I am pretty sure that Willy captured a bird time by time. The owner of Willy now have a new kitten, Bubi, he is sweet, but still very young and super active.

The birds here got used to Smooch being a bit slow in his latter years - though he still proved a mean hunter from time to time. Now they have to look out for Charlie who is as speedy as lightning!

You're right. Cats are predators though they are cuddly at times. Fred, the kitten that I found on the highway, has grown to be a teenager now. He has bagged and eaten a couple of mice.

Good on Fred. I know some people are horrified at cats killing living creatures but it's in their DNA. Charlie's first mouse was a few months ago but didn't eat it.

@sallypup our Charlie is white and tabby, dumped with the rest of his litter and eventually rescued. He's not wild, but he definitely lacks some basic skills his mother may have taught him. I'm so glad you rescued Fred. Charlie has so much love to give us but he doesn't trust strangers.

@valmnz Fred is an alley cat; a white and tabby boy like you see all over the world. Not that different or special but he also is life. I first saw him when he was maybe 7 weeks old, wandering on a busy road. I knew that he would probably never tame up like my Siamese but that also is no reason to leave him in harm's way.

@valmnz Ah bless him, he’s a real cat now! Ours go for mice and regularly bring them into the house for our approval.

His first mouse was a couple of months ago. Yes, he's passed his first test toward cathood! So hard to praise and say good boy when it's a poor little bird. He's on a roll. I've buried three now.

@valmnz It annoys me that they don't at least eat them, although I hear that that gives then worms.

@xFiacre he eats enough flies, spiders, bugs etc to give him all the worms he can cope with! Silly boy.

Even Doodles who is an indoor cat, gets delighted hunting when we go outdoors for walks. I always praise and thank him. He’s so proud.

That's a shame but as you say it's just instinct. Some cats don't bother too much with hunting but others are highly wired for it.

@JudyEv I can't imagine a collar lasting long on Charlie. He'd go crazy trying to rip it off. I'm sure the bird population will soon work out Charlie is faster than poor old Smooch.

@valmnz They say a red collar is a help. Apparently birds see 'red' more easily than other colours. Cats with bells on collars soon learn to move without ringing them but I read that red collars are better.

@valmnz My cat used to talk to the birds that would land on the trees but they ignored her so she does not talk to them anymore and she does not go after them. She likes bugs.

It is in the cat's nature to catch birds and mice to.

I have always growled at them when they leave their prize laying for me to find no matter what it is.

Our old cat Smooch was good at leaving his prizes on the lounge floor for us.

Lily (my cat) love watching the birds and hisses at them. But she hasn't killed one. But she has killed lizards though.
