Friday, December 14, 2018 Retail Rant for Today

A few days ago I bought refills for my wife's Day Timer. It is a package of ruled paper with 6 holes punched in the left side that fit into a small Day Timer binder. It was just a bit larger than the one she owned so it did not fit hers. I had to go back in the store to get a refund, but they said, NO PROBLEM. WE CAN CREDIT BACK TO YOUR BANK CARD. Went home and in a few days my wife told me, THE BANK DEBITED THAT ITEM TWICE that I bought but then returned, at the office supply. I called up the store and told the manager I HAVE THE TWO RECEIPTS that both showed that there were two charges on that one item I was supposed to get credit for returning. He said, NO PROBLEM, JUST COME TO THE STORE AND I WILL TAKE CARE OF IT. THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN THAT OFTEN BUT... Well, It happened and I drove 16 miles to and from that store just to get the money put back in the bank for being charged twice for an item paid for once then returned for credit back to our account. By the time I got back home I had to go to the store to get oranges and bananas and some canned soup. I asked my wife to PLEASE CALL THE BANK TO MAKE SURE YOU GOT CREDIT FOR THAT ITEM AT THE OFFICE SUPPLY. She did call after a while and the bank said two credits for 7.47 were done and the balance was 14.94 more than before. So I was happy to have that confirmed. How much trouble is it for you to get a refund or credit back to your bank for returning an item to an office supply? Do they make mistakes where you do business? I mean, how hard is it to get them to realize the difference between refunding on a return instead of charging you twice for it after you handed it back? If we had not noticed the mistake or if we had lost those two reciepts, we would have been out $15.00 give or take. And these days even 15 dollars can make a big difference in household finances. Especially during the holidays.

@lookatdesktop I placed a $70 order on Thanksgiving that was never delivered. My husband does the bills, I have no account with the site, and I deleted my confirmation email. Oh and I'm not sure which credit card I used to ask my husband to look it up to see if the card was charged. I'm ready to just forget the whole thing and place a new order.

Do you feel that they are trying to get away with it? Because sometimes people here are just trying to get away with something.

@lookatdesktop We have stories like this but intentional... if you will not see it then it is your problem … but good you got yours

No, I believe that person simply made a clerical mistake, but the clerk needs to pay better attention. It should never be intentional to do that sort of thing, just to play games with the customer. I imagine if that clerk did this sort of thing often enough, they would be fired for it from the number of customers complaining about the same type of error made over and over again. As I said, I am pretty sure it was a simple error on the clerk's part.

Sometimes it is frustrating if things are not done accordingly. I hope they can improve their customer service.

I think the lady at the counter who made this mistake, was polite and did not do anything on purpose. People do make mistakes but it was only that I had to drive out there to prove I had to correct this problem to get my money back as I would otherwise have had a nearly 15 dollar loss in my bank account. I might start using cash from now on at some of the office supply stores so that way they have to provide a cash refund if I return an item that is not what I expected it would be, as long as it is in the original package and has not been a long time between the purchase date and the refund date. In this case it was a mere 8 minutes.

@lookatdesktop I do think she didn't do on purpose. But then, she needs to be accurate as much as possible.

@Shavkat , I would not give her a job as a bookkeeper or in accounting. The company would go under in a few days by not keeping track of debits and credits. The manager was talking about losing about 1000 dollars a month, I think it was, in ink loss from shrinkage by people returning ink cartridges that were not the right ones or from theft I believe. This is something that should not have been openly discussed, in front of customers, including me. But the thing is, people talk about just about anything under the sun when they get bored in the retail environment and sometimes it can shine a bad light on the management by not keeping certain subjects in the break room or the office.

Good that you got the money back. Just recently I had a very pleasant surprise. It started out bad as usual. I order food for my cat online from a site called Chewy. I got an email saying that some of the cat food I had ordered somebody had left out thiamine that cats need. If the food is fed the cat get lower thiamine levels and gets sick. I thought how was I going to prove I got the bad batch. there were like 24 cans for $13 so I wrote back and said I had one of the bad batches. How wonderful that I needed no proof. They put the money right back into my account.

I see. I would have asked for the batch numbers. The cans of cat food have some kind of ID number on them or lot number that lets them see if the cans with the missing thiamine would be determinable. But since you got the money back do you still trust them enough to buy more cat food with some degree of confidence that future cans of cat food will contain all of the necessary ingredients?

Well how terrible you had to go to all that trouble. Glad it finally credited though. I have had problems in the past but not recently thank goodness. The main issue like you is the going back and forth to stores..the travel time. For me it is buses and trains. I do have to pay the bus fare twice then to go back which I did have to a while ago at Walmart. Nincompoops.

@Courage7 , I have to just accept the things I can not control. I had to deal with another problem this morning. Got out to get the mail that was dropped off at the house yesterday late at night. One letter was on the porch that fell out of the mailbox. The other letter was crinkled up and folded under the mailbox lid because the mailman is too lazy to walk up the steps and put the mail directly inside the box and close the lid. I really hate this because a few weeks ago we got a picture post card for Christmas with my niece and her husband and three children, that had fallen out of the mailbox onto the wet ground at the bottom of the porch where I managed to get it up before it got totally soaking wet. The mailman really makes me mad on a regular basis.

My only experience is utility payment for internter debited twice. But it was reflected on the following bill. I wouldnt have known how to handle. It's too much hassle for me.

I hope you managed to get that taken care of. When we go to the stores to buy food or supplies, we have to look at the number of items on the ticket and make certain before leaving the store, that we were charged correctly as they sometimes scan an item twice when only one item is purchased. I was lucky the other day when I forgot to get the two cans of soup that I paid for. I went home with only one bag of groceries only to realize I forgot the canned soups so the lady at the store told me she kept the soup for me. I was really glad the people at Kroger are so thoughtful and honest with their customers.

Still I wasted gas because I had to drive out there and drive back. I was told that I would get credit back for the return the day before and instead of them giving me back the credit for the purchase, they made the mistake of charging me a second time for the item. This kind of mistake should not be a regular thing. I mean, There has to be a way for the clerk to know the difference between a credit and a debit.
