Our Uber driver will leave Australia and return to India

We went to a function in Perth on the weekend and stayed with a friend in Fremantle. We called an Uber taxi to take us to the function centre. The driver was an Indian complete with turban. He had been in Australia for ten years and had recently returned from a visit back to the Punjab to visit his parents. As they were now growing elderly, he was planning to return to India to live. His children were thrilled with the idea as they would be much freer to roam and make a lot of noise. They’d also be able to have some pets. Although they lived in a house in Perth I gather pets and making a lot of noise were not compatible with where they lived. His parents loved interacting with the children and would tell them many stories at night. Before he came to Australia our driver had been a teacher. He intended to do a course here so that he would have evidence of his ability to teach English to Indian tertiary students who might want to come to Australia to study. So in twenty minutes we learnt a lot about this man and his family. I found it interesting that the family intended to return to India to live. The pull of family can be very strong but at least he didn’t mention that the snakes, spiders and crocodiles had put him off living here. I don’t have a photo of India but here is one of a Nepalese classroom out in the open. Notice the lady passing by with her load of firewood

I would say that is what are doing 90% of the Indians from Puducherry having opted for the French citizenship : they come in France to work and go back to Puducherry to retire, a place where even a small French pension permits to live better than in France.

Maybe I should retire in India. Would I be allowed to meditate, grow snow peas and green beans, and play pretty guitar? And have a maid? I've never had a maid.

@TheHorse I would absolutely LOVE a maid. You can keep all the rest - snow peas and all.

If they have managed to save some money I'm sure it will go further in India. Not sure what an NRI is.

That's great he wants to return to India to be near his elderly parents. I really need to look closely at your pictures. A simple glance looked like a tree, your mention that the 'tree' was a woman with a load of firewood, made me look again and laugh at myself.

Many Uber drivers in New Zealand also come from India and even technicians from communications companies too.

Yes, family ties sometimes get stronger as we get older. The same is true of our home country.

I think sometimes young people are too busy and occupied to feel it so much but it hits later as they get older.

I think that they have plenty of snakes and spiders also in his country so this is surely not the reason. Many workers want to go back to their native country, this all over the world.

Maybe he left for employment but now he is in a position to be able to go home. My friends visited India and loved it. It is a fascinating country. I think I would find the heat quite trying.

That seems like a great peaceful way to study and learn! Classrooms are great and all, but looking at that picture it just seems like america has a lot to learn about good education methods from other parts of the world.

There are limits though. Here are the older boys crammed into a room. There is barely room for a sheet of paper each.

I wouldn't have thought it would have been a better life but I'm sure for him it is. And although his parents are fit and healthy now, he wants to be there to help care for them as they age which is a really nice thing.

@judyev Well going to India wouldn’t exactly solve any fear he might have of snakes. He would really need to come to Ireland if he was afraid. Family was basically why our family returned to Ireland from Malawi.
