A 1960s Postcard of Palmerston North, New Zealand

The image here is of my home town, Palmerston North, New Zealand and shows what the centre of town was like in the 1960s. Many things have changed since then of course. I used to ride on those red buses in my young years. Now of course the public transport is a modern bus system. Look at those old cars here too! Some of the streets are no longer through streets. The one where the centre bus is has become the intercity bus depot and a parking area. At the top right there's now a one way street, more for parking than anything. The city library now occupies the large white building in the centre and has kept the facade as it is here. We are still lucky enough to have the gardens in the centre of town, known as The Square. I'm surprised at the lack of tall buildings in existence back then. As you can see, we are a very flat city.

I am always on the lookout for old postcards of my hometown, it is interesting to see things as they were when we were young.

@valmnz I have found a few of those as well, our Main Street was quite beautiful, tree lines and a mile long.

Yes, well, what we call tall buildings. Not as tall as down in Wellington, or in Aussie cities

@valmnz Even Perth has a few now but hasn't gone overboard - yet. These would be some of the tallest.

@valmnz Unfortunately the 60s are now considered vintage.

This is a flat city, a real pleasure to walk there. I loved the cities back in the 60s, less buildings more green.

Our city or area is in a valley, but I'm guessing that if we were to take any pictures up high it would still look to be a flat town, compared to many that is. I wondered whether this was your home town or not, Did your first book have something to do with this town in it too? I don't know what type of books you write, but I ran across the post about the train that travels over the runway in that same town.
