Black Licorice Chocolate Brittle

Interesting. I wanted something sweet and my daughter gave a pack of black licorice chocolate peanut brittle she bought from a little shop in a town over. I love black licorice but this sounded odd. I decided to try it anyway and I like it. I've made odd desserts before like yogurt frozen bark and chocolate covered blueberries. I never thought to use black licorice for anything except eating it in straw form. I'm not sure how to make something like this. Does licorice melt? Years ago, my mom and I would get black licorice and cans of 7-Up and sit by our favorite lake fishing. Eating it reminds me of her and our fishing times. We just never were into the red kind though I'll eat it if offered. I rarely buy it. I'm the same with jelly beans. I will eat all the black ones first. Do you like black licorice?

I do like black licorice. The strong Aussie kind is tasty. I'm glad you have those sweet memories of your Mom.

Where do you get the Aussie type? Can you order it online? Thank you. It's something how some foods or smells remind me of times with her.

Does Australia make and export licorice? That's a new one to me if that is so.

@JudyEv I read they sell them in the special shops but most buy from Amazon or other online retailer.

I like red, chocolate and black licorice. I never remember it melting but it just might if it was left in a hot car or something. This is a good question. I look forward to all your answers.

@noni1959 why would you melt it? We eat it right out if the package. We get it either in long strips or very thin rolled up or small squares. Anyway we eat it as is.

I never had chocolate licorice. I'll have to find some. I'm thinking of buying some to melt in a double boiler and see how it goes.

@noni1959 That's probably right. We never had it as kids. We never had chewing gum either and I never developed a taste for that.

@shubhu3 I'm not sure how to describe it. It leaves a bit of a cool feeling in my mouth but trying to think of what it's similar to.

So does my son. He was telling me to try to make something with red. I wonder if a white chocolate would work.

I have never liked black licorice but I love the red cherry licorice. I like all of the jelly beans except the black ones. They taste bad.

I do not like licorice at all. It's hard to find here now, due to the health issue warning. Black licorice contains, a sweetening compound, that is found in its root, that affects potassium levels in the body. Eating black licorice causes the potassium level to fall to dangerous low levels. It also causes high blood pressure, and heart issues. The doctor suggested to my husband to eat a piece when his blood pressure drops.

@noni1959 My blood pressure is also very low all the time. It's hard to find licorice here in Europe now, only pharmacists can sell it.

I read about this way back in my teens but if eaten in moderation and not a lot, it won't hurt. Kind of like eating red meat. You eat too much you can get colon cancer, clogged arteries, etc. My blood pressure is always very low due to my heart condition and I have a pace maker. I don't eat it often but sure enjoy it when I do.
