A Review Of My 2018

The year just parted was a good one for me overall, though it lacked paid work. I started the year with the bulk of my pay from the Xmas work I did for the post office in 2017. Sadly, despite expectation I wasn’t rehired in 2018. Other income sources were more unexpected with wedding photo I took for a friend being used without my permission in a media feature. I was able to claim compensation. Later in the year an expose I wrote about the welfare system saw me get paid too but the media outlet who interviewed me did everything they could to delay the payments. My welfare payment system changed as I was switched to the universally despised Universal Credit, which has reduced how much rent support I get. I have obtained temporary council support for this up to April this year. Their plan is to drive me into cheaper housing. It won’t work. I got to Manchester to meet friends for my birthday in February, and joined them again at a major science fiction convention in Harrogate in the April. This was a great opportunity for me to get pub sign photos too, as was a later visit to Canterbury and Faversham with other pub sign collectors. I made multiple visits to other towns to get photos too, Morecambe, Lancaster and Liverpool especially. The latter also included a trip to one of two weddings I went to last year, and I’m going back there again very soon. I gave talks at the community centre, a voluntary work assignment that the centre then discounted as the kind of voluntary work they invited volunteers to their volunteers Xmas party for. My university voluntary work was much more demanding, but that was rewarded with a Christmas meal. My work on their twelfth annual mental health awareness movie festival gained me a free pass to the Preston International Movie Festival too. My book, story and poetry writing took up much of my time with my first pub signs book due out in April this year. I got to perform poems several times including a set at one of two burlesque shows I attended. Sadly, my favourite local performance venue closed down. I attended the Wigan Diggers Arts Festival, and performed there too. There were some sad events. A neighbour died just before the year 2018 started and his funeral was an early activity for me in 2018. Later, two good friends had heart attacks, but both have made good recoveries. I also learned that my Mum’s cat, Shadow, has a critical heart condition that will kill the cat any time, but Shadow plays and runs happily oblivious of her pending doom. The local Humanists proved to be a waste of time, often talking over one another and rarely doing anything with their knowledge. I quit going. I got lots of great books read and saw many excellent movies. Overall, it was a very good year. Hopefully 2019 will be even better. Arthur Chappell

I am glad that your University work was rewarded with a Christmas meal. I hope you can fix the problem about the welfare payment, they surely want to pay you less for your rent.

@LadyDuck the rent is set by my landlord and it should ideally go right to her but they send it to me to pas on, and under-pay it too

@arthurchappell At least you can stay where you are, it was very rude to try to oblige you to move to another apartment.

@db20747 I'm in the UK, - you can't get Universal credit from the US nor would you want to, as it replaces other welfare benefits here for the unemployed and disabled but it is designed to reduce payments and it can be refused on just about any excuse. Many are starving here because of it.

I thought of some questions to ask based on different paragraphs, we'll see whether I can remember what I thought about while reading. 1}The first is relating to your being switched over to universal credit. Is that something that everyone was switched over to, or is it possibly used more for individuals that aren't trying to get work and that's why they pay less for rent? If the latter, might it be possible that they switch you back to what you were getting before if you are able to get some type of work that lasts longer? 2} The community center voluntary work that you do, in previous years have they allowed you to attend the christmas meals or whatever freebies they have and that is what they changed this last year? If the latter, they probably didn't inform you of that prior to you putting in your time, I'm guessing. Even if you enjoy the work, it is nice to know ahead of time of changes that are being made in case you have other options that may result in something more for your efforts. 3} I didn't realize that all the pictures you take of pubs were going into a book. Well, we will hope that does well for you and brings in some money in that fashion. Cool that you caught your picture of the wedding being used and were able to get something for that.

@MarshaMusselman Not everyone is on Universal Credit yet but they are aiming it to mot people who can't get regular steady work. - the rent allowance reduction is down to general austerity cutback - they set a cap on how much hey pay for houses in set post code areas according to number of bedrooms - I am in a 1 bedroom bedsit but many properties in my area are more expensive and they limit what they decided I should get as support. The community centre has lost a lot of funding and fired several paid so it needs its volunteers but it doesn't look after them so many don't do much Not every pub picture will go in my book - I have taken nearly 5,500

@MarshaMusselman Not the same kind I am writing - some books are on signs in general, while I'm looking at specific theme titles and books for people in local areas where they can easily visit the pubs described

@arthurchappell Wow, that's a lot of pub pictures. But, if the book does well maybe you can use more of those extras in a second book. You said that there were others that also liked to take pictures of pubs or at least visit them. Have any of those folks also published this type of book Hopefully not.
