What is it with me and matches?

For some reason that I just can’t fathom, I don’t seem able to get along with matches any more. I mean it’s not as if I’m not used to them – I grew up in a house where we had open fires in the front rooms (only on Sundays and special occasions, but still…) and often had to light candles when we had power cuts. Even as a student I rented a flat with a fireplace. Then I lived for many years on a boat with a wood stove. Never had any problem striking a match! But now somehow I seem to have lost the knack. I have no problem actually getting the fire to light, once I’ve lit the match, but I have such trouble with that simple step! I strike the match against the little bit of rough paper on the side of the box – and often nothing happens and I just end up sandpapering the head off the matchstick. Or else just snapping the head off completely. Or sometimes the head breaks off just as it catches, and a flaming match-head arcs through the air. I’ve tried doing it harder or more gently, towards me or away – what am I doing wrong? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2019.

@fleura The blame most certainly lies with the matches. Do you strike towards yourself in manly fashion or away from yourself in ladylike manner?

@Fleura Then what you need is a dragon who will breathe flame on whatever kindling or kandle you wish to ignite.

I've tried both - same result.

@xFiacre That is very appealing, especially to my Welsh blood. But do I have to dig underneath a mountain to find one?

This happened to me just a day or two ago. Twice the match flared but went out. It took four matches before one stayed alight.

It took me six matches to get one to actually light the fire last night! Thankfully it then caught well. I certainly wouldn't win one of those boy scout-type fire-lighting with one match competitions.

@Fleura Matches aren't what they used to be though, are they?

I would blame it on the new matches and not on the operator of said matches. I have never been great at lighting a match. It takes me several attempts to get it to strike.

I would - but I seem to have the same problems with every brand!

@Fleura ah, but see, I'd still blame the matches and not myself.

I haven't used matches for years so can't help you. I keep one of those lighter things in case we have a power cut and I need candles, but we've had no power cuts for years either.

Things are a lot better in that respect aren't they? When I was growing up we had a power cut practically every time we had a thunderstorm - and we had a thunderstorm after every couple of days of hot summer weather too!

I'm sorry you're having a time of it getting the match to light. I can't light matches. I burned myself with first and second degree burns back in high school lighting a match to light the oven. I struggled with it since. I use the extra long handled Bic now to light anything.

Gosh I wouldn't have thought they'd burn long enough to inflict such injuries! I'm not surprised you're wary of them! Hope you didn't suffer lasting damage.

@Fleura No, only with my fear of matches and fire.

@Fleura Since you do not like matches now is there someone else to light it for you? We light matches to our candles before our Sabbath starts to bring it in and when holidays start to bring in the holiday.

Sometimes, but it seems a bit pathetic to have to ask someone to help me do something so simple!

I've never had any problems striking matches. I spend nearly 7 months of a year on board ship, where I don't use matches at all. I don't smoke, and all the smoker on board use lighters.

They don't make matches like they use to, it's either that or perhaps you can consider buying strike anywhere matches.

I find that some brands break off. Other than that you got to get the right angle and the right striking power

It's hard to believe they could change matches that much, but maybe.
