Is modern golf equipment supercharged or what?

I wonder how much the equipment and ball have to do with increased distance in modern golf? It doesn't make sense that the average modern pro hits a 7-iron 180y, when they used to hit it 150y in the 80s. Are pro golfers playing with supercharged balls and clubs now or what?
