In a real-life setting, most of us are right-handed (70%) and others are left-handed (5-30%), commonly seen to males. One of the studies revealed that 95% fetuses suck their right thumb while in the womb. During the ancient times, there is a belief and still known today. The Latin word 'sinistra or sinistram' means left hand and in English means 'suggestive of evil.' "Are you a right-handed, left-handed or both?" "Did you experience discrimination for being left-handed?" "Are you a thumb sucker during your infant stage?" Image Credit: sites.psu.edu

One of my sons is left handed and I had not heard the saying until a lady pointed at him in a store and yelled "he's evil!" We were both shocked and startled when it happened, then she explained and left, no apology or anything. It was really very strange because he is one of the nicest loving people I have ever known.

If I am in your shoe, I will be reacting the same way. That woman is so traditional and still stick to her superstitious beliefs.

@Shavkat I am right handed. That is interesting and never knew that. I never sucked my thumb when I was out of the womb. I carried a blanket.

@Hannihar Because it doesn't good for a baby to thumb suck. They might get sick for doing it.

@Shavkat Did you carry a blanket instead? Why would she be terrified?

Sinistram means left hand in Latin and not sinister. In fact in Italian we call the left hand "mano sinistra", those who use their left hands are called "mancini". My husband is left handed and also his mother was.

I had mistaken. I think I should use 'sinistra.' Both 'sinistra or sinistram' means left-hand. "Sinister' means the motion towards the left-hand side. Do you think it can passed on?
Are you looking for meaning of sinistra (sinistrae, sinistram, sinistrarum, sinistras, sinistris, sinistrae) in English? Related word: sinistra, sinistrae, sinistram, sinistrarum, sinistras, sinistris, sinistrae Latin-English dictionary - Dictionary of All

@Shavkat I think it runs in a family. No one in my family is left handed. The Latin word sinistra originally meant "left" but "sinister" was used for "evil" or "unlucky" by the Classical Latin era. We still say that something is "sinistro" in Italian, if it's evil.

@JESSY3236 For me, it is best to discourage the child not to do it.

I've never been a thumb sucker. My daughter is left-handed, and so was my mother-in-law.

In my family, no one is left-handed. I find it cool if they can write both of their hands.
