While at my dance troupe's girls night - we watched the Netflix movie "Dumpling" which is based off of the novel by the same name by Julie Murphy. I actually thought it was more effective as a movie. The premise is that a plus sized teenage girl - grows up in a household with an ex beauty queen/image obsessed woman as her mom. While all of the pageant girls look the same - Dumpling and her friends are - while perfectly acceptable - not the cookie cutter "beauty contestant" type, which causes issues between Dumpling and her mom. Suffering the loss of her aunt who was similar to Dumpling and taught her a lot about life and about being yourself.... Dumpling attempts to navigate the usual - being a teenager, having a crush on a boy, issues with friends growing up , and starting a revolution - by her and her non-traditional friends entering the town's beauty pageant... making a statement , that beauty comes in more than 1 package and is more than skin deep , meeting a cast of colorful characters including drag queens and bikers along the way. Featuring Dolly Parton heavily through the movie, this is a bonus for those Dolly fans out there So yes, I highly recommend this movie and / or book - I suppose it is a "chick flick"... but it is a "chick flick" than even I enjoyed. Trailer:

I loved it! It was certainly a tribute to Dolly Parton, I thought she might have a cameo in it.

It was a great movie :-) I thought she was in it for a minute there. That 1 drag queen really looked a lot like Dolly, thought it was her, but no according to the credits. That would have been great.

I like the soudtrack of the movie. It's not easy to have a mom like J. Aniston. Seems like a feel good movie
