Hang on, we're rolling! I'm counting down my favorite songs with either the words "Town," "City," "State," or "Country" in the title. This is the "Country" edition, and we are at #10: "This is Not Your Country" by Morrissey. Morose, gloomy, morbid, mopey, all the while hilarious. That's Morrissey, former vocalist of legendary 80's alternative guitar rock band, The Smiths, in a nutshell. He's got a legion (myself included) of steadfastly loyal fans, and he's got a legion of people that just can't stand him. But he has always had a talent for taking a political or morbid subject and making it funny to get his point across. Except that in the case of "This is Not Your Country," originally the B-Side of his 1997 single, "Satan Rejected My Soul" (and later made available on the 2009 reissue of that 1997 album, Maladjusted,) Morrissey's trademark dry sense of humor is missing. Lyrics such as "Barb wire upon barb wire," "Gunshot - we hate your kind," "Laid my son in a box, three feet long," are delivered in the most melancholic manner possible: Morrissey at his morose best. In other words, if you stand firmly in the anti-Morrissey camp, "This is Not Your Country" is not going to change your opinion. But I like it. So there! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

As Sparks once sang, "lighten up, Morrissey." He is an acquired taste, and I can take him in metered doses. Ditto people you'd think I'd love all the time, like Webb Pierce.
The official video for the single "Lighten Up, Morrissey" from the 2008 album Exotic Creatures Of The Deep. Originally released on May 19th 2008, and perform...

His sense of humor is definitely missing from this one.
