Retirees Should be Busy

Retirement age in our country is 60; but sometimes those in the government complete the 65 years to get more benefits. Though many of them have retirement funds, I find many of them apparently bored with the monotonous activities at home. Some may have much money to afford travels here and abroad, while others enjoy having a small business. Some just take care of grandchildren, to the delight of their children. But children should not rely on their old parents to be their nannies or babysitters, because they might be too weak to run or play with their children. They should not work hard, but just enjoy retirement years. To avoid boredom they should enjoy being in the company of retirees who form clubs or charity organizations where they can volunteer their time and enjoy other people's company. Though old, they can find themselves of value and can contribute something to help other people.

As you are used to being one, there is no transition period to be addressed at, meaning transition from one who is working full time to just staying home which is not easy. Period of adjustment may take a while.

A homemaker does not really have retirement age; it is like working all throughout the lifetime as long as you are capable of doing it; but you have the option to rest and enjoy life more.

We enjoy our time now we're retired and mostly find ourselves with plenty of things to do to occupy our time. Unfortunately we don't have any grandchildren.

@LadyDuck There is a Seniors' Club in our town but I keep thinking that's for 'old' people. Then I remember that I'm actually one of them myself.

No such thing as retirement if you are a business owner, only when somebody likes to take over it like a son or daughter.

some might need a companion to be able to go out. maybe some don't want to spend too much in case there's an emergency.

@acelawrites and the reason why i am pushing that 1% allotment on the budget is to give them something

It might still be good for them to still work to make them busy and have a healthy body and mind; but they should have something to spend when emergency situation comes.

We are both retired, the retirement age is 66 for women and 67 for men here. We enjoy every day of our life and we do not feel the need to join retirees club or anything like this. We still do the same life we did when we were young.

@acelawrites Those who get bored have no interests. I have many interests and hobbies, it's the same for my husband.

They should, so while young, people should save money or the future or have some business to rely on if they don't have pensions.

I think once you are retired you should get to enjoy your life and do whatever you want to do. Afterall a person has worked all their lived to be able to retire.

I agree; one has to enjoy retirement years because he had devoted his younger years working and so he should reward himself during retirement age.

Retirement age in Romania is 65, but it varies, if you are in the military, you can retire at 45 or even younger. Sure, your pension is way smaller, but it's all up to you. I think that if you feel good, you should keep working something after retirement too, preferably something you like and with a flexible program.

I think it's a very good message to the children who also have already their own family to not to oblige the elderly to take care with their offspring so that they can use their time with other activities they should deserve.

I agree; their children should not rely on old parents to act as baby sitters for their children. They should enjoy retirement years.

I have a colleague who retired at the compulsory age of 65 but right now she is working again as Job Order, I have no question of her being hired as a job order at the age of more than 65, only that the slot should be given to younger people who can be more productive, more computer savy and more updated with current trends.

Retirees can choose what job they wanted to do like online jobs that has flexible time; one that would not give so much stress.

@acelawrites I agree with you, they should only take light jobs to keep them buzy, after all I do not think that money would be an issue as they are already receiving pensions.
