Phil the Pheasant

Fantastic Phil

Let me introduce you to my handsome friend Phil. Phil was obviously bred for shooting but literally managed to find sanctuary on Hillside Animal Sanctuary's meadow. He's been around for several years now and, during the spring, usually has a harem of hens running around with him. He's now become quite tame and comes into my neighbours' gardens and mine to get the best bird food. At the moment, I seem to be the best restaurant on the block and he comes in every morning for his cheap and cheerful budget muesli ... without milk or sugar!! I caught him on his way out of the garden the other day but he was quite happy to hang around while I took his photo. I can't see how anyone would want to shoot such a beautiful thing but that's life I'm afraid ... unless you're like me and a vegetarian.

Even if you are not a vegetarian, you don't have to shoot birds.

Over here in the UK these birds are basically bred for top businessmen to have a 'jolly day out' killing things. Shame they don't spend their money on helping the homeless, giving money to animal, children or medical charities etc

@olliesmum There are also hunters in Germany, but hunting parties like in England are not customary. In a densely populated country the number of wild animals must be supervised. But breeding animals just so that they can be shot is kind of perverse, isn't it?

@MALUSE All farm animals are bred just so they can be killed, isn't that the same?

My other half is waiting for Ollie, our cat, to catch him! I don't eat meat so not much good for me but pheasant would be a real treat for Adam.

I've heard that vegetarians and vegans are increasing day by day! My partner, who loves his meat, will now eat some veggie food as it's getting better by the month. He enjoys my veggie sausages and veggie chicken nuggets ... hoping to persuade him to try veggie mince but no go so far!!

@olliesmum I know what you mean, I think it is hard on those who love to eat meat, although nowadays there are lots of varieties of vegetables and other vegetarian food.
