Do you inform your landlord or housemate that you will be away from you rented room or your neighbour if you own a house? What will you do to ensure your property is save in place without anyone invaded it when you return to the place?

If I rented a house I would totally tell the landlord that I would be out for some time so they are aware. I would also give him my phone number, and add them on facebook just in case of emergency. As for the indoors safety, I would lock the doors, windows, make sure the gas is closed, and last but not least unplug every single electric device in my place.

Will you not worry that the landlord will access to your house to do random checking since they have a pair of key for all the doors.

@Acefun Depending on the person who is the landlord. If the person is not to be trusted, I don't know what I would do. However if there would be something missing once I got back from where I was, I would immediately question them regarding what happened being that they are the only one who have a key copy.

@jvicentevalera That is possible but the problem will be getting bigger if he deny that he had done it. Would it be good to not inform the landlord to avoid such problem arise?

When we are going away for a while we tell the neighbors. They don't have a key, but they will call us if there is a problem. We recently got new locks. They were quite expensive, but I am happy me paid for them, because the old locks weren't very good and it was far too easy to break in.

We own two houses. When we are away from our main house, the security system is armed, lights are on timers, two neighbors know, and our son checks the house often. At our other home, we have a neighbor that checks the inside weekly.

@Acefun We did have a problem with our second house. The person at the time abused our friendship, so we had the keys taken away from him. Now we use another neighbor who watches our place and many others as a side business. Him, we can trust.

That is a brilliant idea for having a remote CCTV so that you can see the situation of the house when no one is in the house. However, do you fully trust that your neighbours will not disturb your property when they walk into your second house for checking (I assume that the house does not have CCTV install)?

Yes, I have a friendly neighbor who I tell when I will be away. I also have a home alarm. Of course, even with these things my property could still be invaded, but at least I have some protection.

@Acefun You are right! There are always additional problems that are hard to account for...

With the home alarm installed in the home, it might trigger neighbor attention. However, the thief or someone might still get away your property before you reach the house.
