I Think I have a House Elf!

My kids all went through a Harry Potter fan phase (what am I saying, they’re still there!!) and being an occasionally overly involved parent I read all of the books right along with them. Many days I wished I had a house elf to magically take care of household or a wand that I could wave and at least get the laundry to fold itself. At the beginning of the year, a friend of my daughters moved in with us. We didn’t really have the room, but both of my girls were willing to make the shift to squeeze another young adult into the household. This young lady has settled easily into our household. She works full time and spends a significant amount of time visiting her sister or helping out her grandmother with errands and doctor’s appointments. When she’s here I rarely see her, but much like the waving of branches and leaves show the passing of the wind the swept entryway and neatly lined up shoes prove that there is someone in this household other than my own offspring. Don’t get me wrong, my kids pull their own weight. They help out around the house when they can, but tidying up the entryway has never been a high priority for any of us. I don’t think I’ve ever actually caught her cleaning, but I’m appreciating the evidence that she leaves behind.

I knew she was a sweetheart before she moved in. No one around here cleans when they're bored, they usually make bigger messes (I know I do). My house elf cleans when she's bored .

That is really nice of her to lend a helping hand. I lived with my best friend and her parents for awhile. We all had our own chores to get done in exchange for cheap rent. Her mother was like a second mother to me as well.

She was willing to pay rent, but I didn't want to charge her for being squashed into a room with my two daughters (thankfully the bedroom is a large one). Our official deal is that she provides dinner for the family once a week and keeps us stocked with fresh fruit.

@SophiaMorros That's a generous deal. It will also help her save for her future, her own place etc.

@ScribbledAdNauseum that was our reasoning.

You are already being blessed for helping this young girl. God sees and He will bless you, too!

We were a little concerned about how squeezing another young adult into the household would work out, but it's been easy peasy. Having the oldest son move back in for a bit next month is going to be more challenging.

I have been listening to the Harry Potter books. I'm waiting on the 4th book right now. I like them so far. I'm not a neat person. My mother wishes I was. She is now my uncle's house elf. He doesn't clean his house.

Right around the time my youngest child was born, I checked Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets out of the library to see what the buzz was all about (the first book in the series wasn't available) I proceeded to read the first four books as soon as I could get my hands on them. I read each of the last three within 24 hours of their release . I can't entirely blame my children.

@SophiaMorros I remember when you had the bonus son. Can we sell you a motor-home? It will sleep three - if two sleep together. Or maybe you and your husband could live in the motor-home and leave the house to the kids.

She's the complete opposite, temperment-wise, of my bonus son from a couple of years back, but she fits into our household just as well. I may end up with all six kids for a bit in March...my house is gonna burst!

You and your daughters are lucky to have this young lady stay with you. Her cleaning or tidying up is such a heartwarming gesture of silently saying to you and your girls, thank you :-) House elf... I wish I would have one too :-) Perhaps most moms would need one :-)

I'm on the tail end of "Momming" so I don't need the help as much as I once did. But I am appreciating it
