The Sound Of Silence

I slept hard and deep last night, I had no where to be today so no alarm was set on the clock, no mental alarm either. Seven hours later I woke, to the sound of silence. The house cold. No red numbers from the beside clock. No noise at all means the power is off. I took out my cell phone and I had no signal and I got a "No service" when I dialed the power company. I walked around my room and found a spot. I reported my power outage but the area was already being worked on, I added my house. I went back to bed, I was thinking about making coffee, using the battery, hoping it was charged by the solar panels. Fifteen minutes later the power came on, I crawled out of bed and grabbed a robe, socked my feet and sweats for warmth on my legs. The beeping of the smoke detectors coming back to life woke Tony and he told me the power went off at 4 am, he was watching a movie, no storm just light rain. I got power back 15 minutes after calling but they had predicted 9 am, glad it was sooner. Makes me want off grid full solar power so badly.

I would likely wake from the silence. Our heat is gas, no blower, wall furnaces. I hear those are going to be decommissioned sometime soon, if not already. I think my next project is to connect with a weatherization program for us low income elderly seniors.

Yes I would! I know some people save, my sister is on a low income program and she is only 51, she does get a discount. This is the power company. Really? I thought natural gas was one that was being looked at as an alternative.

@GardenGerty I can't even picture what a wall furnace would look like. Do you happen to have a picture? I have a big furnace in my cellar that runs off fuel oil so I'm not familiar with anything else. As mine cools down after running it makes a huge boom sound that always scared everyone who isn't used to it. One time I had a guy here and when he heard it he ran and hid lol. I hope you are able to find some good weatherization services there. I know the ones around here don't do much but being such a low income area my guess is they don't have a lot of funding to help people.

@andriaperry It is amazing. You get used to the sounds and dont notice them, until they are gone.

Knock on wood, I've never had a power outage here at my house, even through two hurricanes. My internet went out for 3 days once, but that was because a construction crew had accidentally cut the cable line that fed into our neighborhood. But otherwise, I've been very lucky. Glad your power came back on sooner than they had estimated.

@andriaperry Probably from aging equipment/transformers, or from trees or tree branches hitting the power lines. I know that happens a lot in places with heavy tree canopy.

When I lived in town it was common for the power to just go off, some times for s minute or two and sometimes for hours. I never knew why.

Even solar is unreliable.

The nice thing about full solar (and a generator) I don't worry about that anymore! Have you see some of the new portable solar kits?

After last winter and 2 days of no power I bought a 100 watt kit. When Summer came and a storm, it came in handy for Tony`s breathing treatments and my coffee making, plus I had the laptop so I could get online and keep it charged, that time the power was off 2 1/2 days

@DocAndersen I am having a problem finding a dealer here, that is not gonna cost me $10,000. But I think I want to replace the roof first, from shingles to ,metal.

@andriaperry we went solar after a 2-day outage due to a massive post-hurricane cleanup. No power, for the full two days.

Wow light rain and the electric went out. I wonder if someone got in an accident and hit a power line or something. I love that song! Gives me the chills. My daughter is still sleeping or I would turn the song on and blast it to sing along to. My kids wouldn't be happy if I did that anyway I'm an awful singer.

Do you have back up storage batteries for your solar panels? You live in a good place to use solar. My hubby has had trouble with his batteries when he messed with solar panels.

So glad the power returned so quickly for you. We put in a generator for that very reason. We investigated solar panels, but would have had to have too many trees removed.

I had thought about getting a gas generator but by time I spend the money for it and supply the gas, I can invest in another form of power.

Now it is becoming possible to be off-grid and I think it will be the norm in the near future - siva

I think so too, one day soon most will be solar or another off grid power source.
