That Darn Dog

We have a very sweet, very friendly, reasonably obedient golden retriever. Unfortunately, she’s also very, VERY smart. Every now and again she manages to make a break for freedom. Yesterday afternoon was one of those times. While I was walking her she chomped down on her leash and bit it clean through. In the house, she’s a well trained, obedient canine. When she’s outside off-leash she’s an absolute nightmare. Her goal is to do whatever is necessary to remain free. Keep-away is her favourite game. Did I mention that she’s smart? She knows how to keep her distance so I can’t quite grab her collar and she’s wise to all my tricks. Under normal circumstances she would push my husband (her favourite person) over a cliff for a lick of peanut butter, but not when she’s off-leash. To keep her from running off into the woods or out onto the busy county road that runs along our neighbourhood I spent a good 45 minutes encouraging her to chase the kids’ old rope swing. Fortunately, she’s a true retriever and if something needs to be chased she WILL chase it. It took some time, but eventually, she was tired enough that she allowed me to take her back into the house. It’s a good thing she’s cute!

The house would be very empty without her.

She is. Also friendly and cuddly and perfectly obedient in the house. And very, VERY good at making sad puppy-dog eyes.

@WiseGhots I'm more of a cat person, but if I have to have a dog she's the one I'd pick.

My dog may not be as big as your golden retriever but my Danie could run quite fast and when she sees other dogs or cats, she would certainly run after them to play and wouldn't heed my call. That's why I never let her off the leash when we're out in public.

I never EVER let her off deliberately. It's been a good 3 months since the last time she "pulled a runner."

She is adorable, there's no question about that. We were watching our son's dog once, sitting casually in a lawnchair enjoying a nice summer afternoon, and we looked down and his dog and bitten thru her lease also. Does Nessie have any Canadian cousins?

No canine ones that she's actually met. But there are a couple of two legged Canadian relatives she adores. Apparently my sisters and I have all married men who meet her approval.

Fortunately, she LOVES to chase the kids' old rope swing. I couldn't actually catch her, but I could at least keep her in our yard and wear her out. My arms ache just thinking about it .

With a personality to match. She's only aggravating if she gets off-leash outside.

@SophiaMorros I love retrievers. She sounds very smart. I had a lab and when i started to trust her and took the leash off of her and instead of going up the stairs to our apartment she went right back down and out of the building. I could not find her and after two hours she accidentally came home. She followed a dog that went to our upstairs neighbor that that knew she was my dog and brought her back to me. She had a good time out there and she threw up what she did out there. I loved her with all my heart and miss her so much. Your dog looks very sweet and guilty. My cat's name is Sophie. I will put her picture here now.
