Her Booklist

Just ordered some books from a certain author for my penpal's birthday. I have done this for the last decade or so but this time I was better organized: having a booklist of what I had sent before. Almost kicked myself when I realized twice now, I had made a mistake of sending her some books which I had sent her before. On second thoughts, it was her fault really since I always begged her to send me the booklist (of what books she had already got there) but she was always vague in her replies. Do you often spend a lot of time every year getting birthday gifts for your good friends' (or loved ones)? For this good friend, at least I have finished with the duty for this year. Until next February .

Books are awesome gifts to give. I try to make each gift I give very personal and meaningful. Not an easy task.

I am a bit worried if anyone sends me books which I don't like (I am very fussy about books ). In my friend's case, she told me of her favorite authors, I just have to collect them for her. (that is, if I have the money to get them for her or not ).

@DianneN An acquaintance once gave me a book about how to love Jesus better. I didn't know what to say... (I so wanted to burst into tears!)

I also would like to have a list. I always scratch my head to find gifts that would like to have my goddaughters. Sometimes they look satisfied, sometimes less satisfied...

@YrNemo I gave cash a few times when I was lacking of ideas, and PayPal money once. Gift cards are restricting what you can do. I finally joined Bing Rewards a few days ago (I started a discussion about joining it in 2017, it took me time), and they have mainly gift cards, I dislike that.

Wish it could be less bothersome, like, giving the money to the person, saying, 'here is the budget for that birthday gift, take it & pls get out of my hair!' . (but do they really expect the birthday gift in the first place??? perhaps they don't (or perhaps they do???) - perhaps a gift voucher will be better? )

@topffer It does sound embarrassing in my case, asking my friend if I could give her a gift voucher (I thought of that often, just to save myself the problem ).

Maybe she is like me reads them then donates them so she might not still have them to tell you. That does stink you sent her two you had already given her. That’s so nice you send her gifts. What is the author you ordered books from this time?

@shaggin I never knew about her seriously until my penpal told me, 'I love that author!' . I can't read books with too much dramas in the middle (prefer none really), or if there is anything, then they must be detective stuff. No soap operas type!!!

As all my friends have an Amazon account, they place the books they want in a wishlist that we can check. This is the easiest way not to go wrong buying a book.

@YrNemo I love books, we have plenty of books and I often buy the new books from my favorite authors as soon as available. I received so many books that I already owned that we decided to create this wishlist.

@LadyDuck (I did tentatively tell my friend of this wishlist business - in case she could get some old books for me in countries closer to her, but I don't think she understood ever... )

I wish my friend would do the same. Oh well, as it is, she just told me vaguely of her favorite writers or singers, actress/actors etc.

My thought exactly. Why can't she just be a bit clearer to save me the trouble???

I haven't heard of anyone having a penpal for years. That's such a wonderful idea. And how lovely that you are sending her books.

She sent me things faithfully for the last 3 decades . I begged her to stop, she didn't, still doing it really, so I have to do my part here .

I do spend a lot of thought on what to buy for birthdays. It would be quite easy to give a person the same book twice especially if you are giving several books each time.

especially if those books are the type which are not your favorite.
