Do you really "lol" or do you just not know what to say?

I was just thinking about a line that people used to say many years ago. I saw it a lot during the days when MSN was around. Maybe it is still around I have no idea! But a lot of people used to use this emoji or picture or GIF or whatever it was! And it said "I'm not really Laughing out Loud. I just don't know what else to say." I personally never type "haha" or "lol" unless I really have been amused by what someone said. I feel like I am lying if I used it and didn't laugh. Have you ever used "lol" or "haha" as a response because you didn't know what else to say?

I usually can think of something to say. I may have an lol in my comment, but I never just comment lol. A friend of mine suggested a more honest abbreviation: lqtms, laughing quietly to myself.

Now that one is great ... just that lqtms can also be read as ridicule.

@norcal I have never heard of that before! I think I prefer to use that because I am mainly laughing quietly to myself rather than laughing out loud.

@vandana7 I guess a lot of people would not know what you meant. We'd have to promote it so it becomes commonplace, like lol.

@andriaperry Same. I can't remember if I ever used it randomly back when I was a teenager but I know I don't use it now unless I am really laughing.

@wanghui That is a good idea. To smile while trying. Sort of throws of the positive and happy vibe then for others to hopefully feel!

@TiarasOceanView Sometimes I laugh. And it can get annoying too because some people take me as lacking a sense of humour just because I don't type haha or lol. I don't understand why we can't just laugh to ourselves and not having to feel like we must update people with it.

@TiarasOceanView One guy once attacked me via Facebook all because I didn't express my emotions through text. He said "You are always so f*cking miserable." And that actually upset me because it meant I was misunderstood. This guy wasn't a nice person. He claims he was but he wasn't and he'd attack my way of living or the way I spoke often. So glad I've blocked him. I can say "HA HA" I've blocked you! Now that is funny d0uche nozzle! I didn't like him very much.

Honestly, if I say haha or lol then it means I genuinely smiled or laughed. But I know some people use it to convey that they sentence they are writing is meant to be funny, or not meant to be taken seriously. It's so hard to tell people's meanings behind some of their comments, that using haha or lol can be a way for them to let other people know to have lighten up and have a sense of humor.

@VivaLaDani13 The funny thing is, I remember that moment, although I don't remember what you said that made me almost spit out my coffee! Funny how we remember the little things

@moffittjc I'm happy you remember! And yeah it's something that just makes me smile. I think it may have been the real early days when I was just starting to talk with you here. Not sure.

@moffittjc Well said. You know, sometimes I randomly think about one of the first time's I made you laugh. I really don't remember what I said but I just remember your reply telling me that you nearly spat out your coffee from wanting to laugh at whatever I said. I don't know why I think about that sometimes but it always makes me smile.

Some one did that to me recently, but I just did not react much since it's their choice. As long as it's not offensive.

@Letranknight2015 I agree! "lol" wouldn't look too good if it's responding to a sad story or something.

I use "lol" or "haha" even if I am just amused or find it funny. Not necessarily bursting out in laughter. Just plain amused. I think I use "ok" or :/ or :| when I don't know what to say? Or maybe "?" too

@Daljinder It's always good and heart warming to me when you are laughing.
