Black History - Black Hockey Players #7 - Seth Jones

I've been as busy as a guy searching the house for enough spare change to get a couple 24oz beers, but I'm still trying to extend Black History Month in the best way that I know how, by answering the question "Are there any black hockey players?" Yes, and I am counting down ten. We are at #7: Seth Jones. Currently playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets, defenseman Seth Jones was drafted into the NHL in 2013 by the Nashville Predators with the 4th overall pick. Blessed with a highly accurate shot, Jones currently co-owns the Blue Jackets record for most goals by a defenseman in a single season with 16. He also serves as an alternate captain for the team, and is a three-time All Star. Seth Jones learned to play hockey right here in Denver, when his father, Popeye Jones, was playing in the NBA for the Denver Nuggets. At age five, Seth and his older brother Justin developed an interest in playing roller hockey with their friends, were given inline skates, followed by ice skates (despite having a pro basketball dad, the hockey bug was strong with the Jones kids. Younger brother Caleb was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2015.) At the suggestion of then-Colorado Avalanche captain (now general manager) Joe Sakic, Seth Jones spent a year taking ice skating lessons, began playing organized ice hockey at age six, and was playing in travel leagues by age eight. He played in three Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey tournaments, spent two years in the United States National Team Development Program, is a two-time gold medalist at the IIHF World U18 Championship, and was a member of the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships-winning team. Only six years into what should be a lengthy NHL career, Jones has appeared in 393 NHL regular season games (and 17 post-season games,) and has scored 45 goals and notched 137 assists (1/10 playoffs.) I'm going to go out on a limb and say that those numbers are going to greatly increase over the years. This guy is really good! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

He's still fairly young, and Columbus isn't really a major market, so it's not really all that surprising. Obviously, we knew about him here early on. The rumor was that the Avalanche were going to take him with the first pick, but we drafted Nathan MacKinnon instead.
