Working on layer 3 of seasoning on my 12 inch cast iron skillet

I'm doing the flax seed oil seasoning method on my second 12 inch cast iron skillet. Tonight is the 3rd layer of the 5 that you are supposed to apply. I rubbed a very thin layer of flax seed oil on all of the interior surfaces of the skillet with a paper towel. Then I put it upside-down on the rack of a pre-heated 500 degree F oven. It is currently baking for an hour. Then you turn off the oven and let everything cool down. There will be 2 more coats (possibly 3) to apply after this one. Some people on Chowhound have soured on this seasoning method but I like it because it allows me to scrub the skillets and wash them with soap without worrying that I'm totally going to destroy the non-stick layer. You do need to re-do it every 6 months or so but I'm fine with that. I'd rather do that than never wash out the pan.

Never used flax seed oil. Why is that so different?

I don't know. It seems to adhere better to the cast iron IMO. I tried doing the "add oil after every use/wipe out" but that never worked well for me. When I'm out of flax seed oil, I'll try this method with another oil just to compare.
