The Perils of Peer Pressure

My friend and I were recently sharing stories about our childhoods. The subject of peer pressure came up too. I remembered a time when I acted against my own better judgment because I wanted to seem "cool" to my older friend. Ann was 14 and I was 12. I looked up to her but I felt she just tolerated me. She lived in my neighborhood. One summer day, she invited me to her house just to hang out for awhile. I was surprised and happy! We drank iced tea and talked in her backyard. When she finished her tea, she gently tossed her glass onto the grass. When I finished mine, I looked for a safe spot to lay my glass down. She said "Just throw it like I did!" I hesitated. "What if it breaks?" She insisted "It won't! Mine didn't! Just toss it! Come on!" So, I did. It gently rolled on the grass, then right into a tree! It shattered. I was so embarrassed and worried that her Mom would be mad! Well, she wasn't too happy, but she didn't make a big deal about it. Lesson learned! It's funny to me now. Do you remember a time you gave into peer pressure?

You poor thing. It's sad that you didn't want to do it and then you get the blame.

Thanks @JudyEv. Well, at least I didn't get in trouble over it, so I was relieved about that.

I was very sure of want I wanted so not often, at least I never risked my things. But I ofetn wnet for movies, which I otherwise, wouldn't have watched as they insisted a lot.

Thanks @Sheali. As I got older, I was less influenced by peer pressure. I also watched a movie once because my friend insisted. I didn't want to and I can still remember some of the scary images!

I'm happy to say that I never had this problem although I moved to a different part of the country as an 11-year-old child and had a different accent from the local children. I never had the urge to change and be like someone else.

Hi @MALUSE It's so good that you never struggled with a desire to impress someone else, even from a young age. Thanks for your comments.

Peer pressure is a powerful thing. I let a friend persuade me to take a ride with a couple of older boys one time. I knew I shouldn't have but did it anyway.

Yes, there is something about trying to impress older kids, it seems! Thanks @HazySue.

Bad habits like smoking and drinking were often acquired during our teen years because of our wanting to belong to a group. As adults it is assume we have develop better judgement through the learning process. But still we are not immune to peer pressure because of our need to interact socially with others. There is a sense of security to ran with the pack but we are awed and stand in admiration of the courage and independence of the lone wolf.

Many times I did something from peer pressure which I would not do if I am alone.

True @db20747! My Mom used to tell me to use her as my excuse. She said if I felt too embarrassed to tell my friends that I didn't want to do something, I should say that Mom would certainly find out and I'd get grounded forever!
