Three Sisters In The Garden

The rain stopped and the sky lightened up, Its cooler but I still only wore short sleeves. I had only planned to set out a few tomatoes in the garden, it has not been plowed and won`t be this year. I set out 10 tomatoes plants. But, while I had the shovel out I began to flip dirt and busting the clods, soon I had a nice area turned over 2 1/2 feet wide and about 20 feet, this felt effortless. What is three sisters? Its beans, corn and squash. The Native American Indians planted these together. The corn tall and strong for the beans to run up on and the squash to shade the roots so no weeding was necessary. So, I planted corn, beans and squash in that freshly turned over ground, I will see if all this works. Next I sowed seed for more big boy tomatoes and black beauty eggplant in pots on the deck. I also put sunflower seed out by the deck. The evening ended with the sun shining bright as it set the sky turned deep pink and purple. How was your Saturday?

What a beautiful post! It reminded me from a long time ago, when I was young and was all day, if weather let me, at the garden.

Good luck on your plantings! I have to get mine done in the next few days. I spend the day with two of my daughters and two grandchildren yesterday. It was fun.

I was stuck inside except for doing chores. Maybe some fresh air tomorrow. I have planted like that and had it work very well. Only instead of beans I planted peas.

@andriaperry That is about the only way I can grow peas as our garden stays to wet in the spring to get into. The corn helps keep them cooler which helps a lot. Once we get the line fence up I might try planting peas by it. I plan on setting tires there for my gourd plants anyways. The peas would be started early enough that the gourd plants should not hurt them.

Saturday was very full and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed buying more herbs. I have one Big Boy tomato plant that our postmaster grew and I have the perfect container for it. The nature center we took sis too was nice and she talked this one lady's leg off.

Our Saturday was busy, we had a lot of running around that we got done. We picked up our hind quarter of beef and got that all packed neatly in our deep freezer. I don't enjoy doing that, but with my husband's help we got it all neatly stacked in there and I made up a nice little map of what is where. This will help with keeping track of how much we have left and how long it lasts us-which is good for budgeting purposes. Sweet corn and squash are my favorites out of the garden.

I love how you planted and described the three native american plants. I have to plant pumpkins, I do not care if they do not grow, I love the flowers to make the fritters.

It will be another two months before we can plant our garden. It won't grow until mid to the end of June because the soil isn't warm enough.

@andriaperry I tried last year and it was a bust. This year I'll buy a couple of tomato plants....a cucumber plant and done zucchini at the local greenhouse. The rest gets seeded in the garden...late June...harvest....August.

How cool is that!! Your title sound vaguely familiar but it didn't "twig" until I started to read. Can't wait to see how your "three sisters" work together!!!
