Repainting Thrift Store Artwork

United States

I got sick of the vast empty white space of my apartment walls. I don't really have much to use in the way of decorating them. Posters have not held up very well in the multiple moves these past few years, most of my artwork is still locked away in a shed over a thousand miles away from here, and I am too broke to shop for pieces of art catering to the nerdy, geeky tastes of my husband and I for the time being. So I came up with another solution; I dragged my husband to a local thrift store and asked for any stretched canvas paintings they didn't think would sell very well. The guy at the counter offered me a massive dusty painting of a sunset (sunrise?) and some trees for a dollar. That night, I excitedly cleaned the painting up, taped up the sides of the frame with masking tape, applied two layers of acrylic gesso while my dog supervised and then took to my sketchbook while it dried. Do you go to thrift stores? What kind of interesting things have you found at them? What was the best deal you've gotten?

That is a really good idea. Most often you can buy a picture like that far cheaper than just buying an empty frame brand new! Yes I shop in Thrift stores/ charity shops all the time, most of my clothes come from there, and any time I want some small household item that is my first place to look - things like table lamps, waste paper baskets, kitchen gadgets are so expensive to buy new and so cheap second hand!

Considering the cost of the canvas and the cost of the framing of the canvas, one dollar is a pretty great deal! Most of the time I shop at thrift stores for clothes and furniture. Especially furniture. I have a few pieces that I sanded down and repainted to make look good as new.

Thanks! I got the idea from somewhere else, but I can't remember where. It might have been a suggestion from one of my art teachers a long time ago. Usually clothes and furniture is the reason I go to them. But I noticed a LOT of paintings stacked up against the wall the first time I went to the local one and was bummed I didn't bring any money with me at the time. There wasn't as many this time. But I still walked out with exactly what I was hoping for.
