Gravity - such a serious business.

A thought came to me today as I was lying back on a big slab of rock under a tree. The afternoon was hot but a cool breeze coming in off the sea freshened things up a bit and the question arose in my mind, “Why gravity?” And why indeed? Now I don’t want to hear about physics and all that - I left physics behind when I was sixteen because we just could not get on together. I don’t need a mechanical, mathematical explanation for the phenomenon that we have come to call gravity. Nor am I looking for a philosophical proposition at this time of night; I’m just really wondering about how dangerous it can be and trying to find a way of mitigating the negative aspects of its force. For example gravity is the cause of things falling on top of people, like coconuts falling from trees on top of people innocently sheltering underneath them. Gravity when mixed with a surfeit of alcohol can also lead to nasty falls. The ideal would be selective gravity, whereby it would be present for the purpose of keeping us all anchored to the earth, but would be suspended wherever there are coconut trees growing. Have you any better ideas?

Gravity is there to distinguish stupid people from intelligent ones. The ones sitting under coconut trees learn that they belong to the stupid category when a coconut hits them on their heads.

@maluse I suspected that there must be a good reason for gravity existing. I must avoid coconut trees in future.
