Theme cafes

I used to visit a Danish cafe called 'Den smagloese cafe'. The name means 'The tacky cafe' and it looked very different from other cafes. The furniture, the lamps and the other decorations were kitschy and ugly, and the colors didn't match. That was the whole point of course. I would never use those decorations in my own home, but it was fun to look at them, there were many quirky things that we don't usually see in a cafe. There are many other theme cafes and theme restaurants around the world for instance cat cafes, rabbit cafes, prison restaurants, hospital restaurants, vampire cafes, boardgame cafes and the toilet themed restaurant (Modern Toilet) Did you ever visit a theme cafe or a theme restaurant? Which theme would you choose if you had the chance to make your own theme cafe/restaurant?

@porcospino Café Philosophe would be my themed cafe. Each table would be dedicated to a different philosopher with quotes from his/her thoughts on the table, and little cards with questions to discuss over coffee such as “What does it mean to be human”. A special table would be set aside for those who appreciate Kierkegaard of course.

I really like that idea. I think that it would be an interesting place to visit, and it could lead to some great discussions. I am thinking about taking a short course related to philosophy at the end of this year. It takes place at university, but it is open for everyone including people who don't study there.

@Svidrigaylov I think that it would be a great concept. Some tables would probably be more popular than others.

I am thinking but I cannot remember that I have ever seen a theme cafe or a theme restaurant... well except in Las Vegas, I remember the "Wizard of Oz" themed restaurant at the MGM Hotel Grande.

Your post reminded of a themed place called Alice in wonderland, I think it is somewhere in Asia. I have never been to Las Vegas, but I once read an article about some of the unusual restaurants. I think that the article mentioned a rainforest cafe and a Dining in the dark restaurant. I know that Dining in the dark also exists in Copenhagen, but I have never been there.

@LadyDuck Some people probably don't notice the differences because they haven't seen the real places. We were surprised to the copy of the Eiffel tower in Vietnam. It looked very different.

@Porcospino There are many unusual places in Las Vegas, the Casinos are all "themed". I visited the "Monte Carlo Hotel", they said it was designed to be exactly like the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, well, may be it looks alike, but the people, the atmosphere, the noise, everything was to much different that I could find nothing similar.

i'd go for the same reason - it's fun to go and could spark memories and laughter but i'd never decorate with them. of the themed cafes you mentioned, i'd choose cat, rabbit, and boardgame.

It was a fun place to visit. They had a lot of things I had never seen before. Many of them were ugly, but it was fun to see the decorations. The furniture was unusual as well and the chairs and table weren't alike. I have never been to a cat cafe or rabbit cafe, but I would love to visit that kind of place. The boardgame cafe also sounds interesting, I think there is one on my island.

I wish I could show you a photo of the place, but I don't think that the cafe exists anymore. It was a fun place to visit and the decorations were very unusual.

Maybe the hospital restaurant is the worst theme for me; how could you eat in such a gloomy place!

I read about the hospital restaurant. It was somewhere in Asia I think. I read that the drinks are served in syringes and the tables are hospital beds. It sounds kind of strange, but I have never seen the place in person.

There used to be one on my island, but it doesn't exist anymore. I think that they are more common in Copenhagen or other big cities.

I've never seen a theme restaurant or café and must admit that I have no idea in this field.

I have only seen the cafe I mentioned. There aren't that many of them on my island, but I know that there are several in Copenhagen. The lastest one I heard of was a laundry cafe (the guests do their laundry and buy coffee while they wait) That one is also in Copenhagen.
