Mosquitoes vary in how they over-winter. In the north mosquitoes usually over-winter as eggs, which hatch when the ice thaws. Most other mosquitoes may over-winter as eggs or larvae, but some Anopheles (malaria) mosquitoes may over-winter as adult females. These are often found clustered in sheltered areas, such as under boardwalks in cypress swamps in Florida.
