$20 to place an ad in the paper!

I rang a local paper this morning to place an ad in for a garage sale I'm going to have. It was free for me to do which was good but then she asked if I would also like this placed into another Newspaper we have here. I was going to say yes until she told me that it would be $20 to do. I do know that there are some papers out there that will cost you money to place an ad in and usually they charge you per letter / per word but 20 bucks to place an itty bitty notice in the paper? No thank you. I'm trying hard to make and save money. I don't know how much I will sell during my garage sale but I don't want to spend $20 on it. I will advertise it as much as I can for free. I have a lot to do to get ready for this garage sale but still plenty of time yet. It will be on the 8th of June, Saturday.

@VivaLaDani13 It seems not worth it then if they'll only publish for Saturday and Sunday and it depends how many readers do they have, do they have statistics how many newspapers they can sell?

@tech40 I think for the week. I'm not sure. I don't know how often their paper goes out. Maybe every Saturday or Sunday, not sure.

What about community garage sales. A lot of people flock those. How do they schedule? The neighborhood seems to know about it. I've seen it in youtube.

@yoalldudes That is a good idea and definitely something I have considered but not too sure about that just yet as there is almost always a fee for that. There are some held every weekend that I know of.

@VivaLaDani13 Maybe the fee is cheaper.

@yoalldudes It's about the same price in the locations I've looked up. So my best chance for now is at my house where I'm free to do so. Then maybe sometime after that I can venture out in another location.

I don't blame them as they are doing business but I think you will get potential buyers from social media and free classified site. Something similar happened with my cousin when he was in hurry to sell his car.One of the classified site insisted him for premium listing saying blah blah and he went for it paying $15 but he got the buyer quickly from the another free classified site and closed deal.

Use social media. Or create a group for items which you want to sell

I have heard of them charging per letter or word....20 is kind of pricey though for sure! Good luck on your garage sale! We want to have a yard sale ourselves very soon.

That's really expensive because I know $20 Aussie equals more in US$.

@JohnRoberts Sure does. I just looked it up out of curiosity and $20 AUD equals to $13.83 USD.

@dya80dya It really is. I'm sure it would help gain more people to come but I'd rather keep the $20 and take my chances.

It looks pretty expensive to me but I guess it is the nearly the same story here, though it depends how popular the newspaper is. Good luck on your sales.
