Did your mum ever cut your hair when you were young?

I was looking through some old photos yesterday and had to laugh at some of the terrible haircuts my mother gave me when I was small. I don't remember feeling upset so I suppose I was too young to care what I looked like. Back in the 50s and 60s I think it was often mum who took the scissors to their kid's hair because it was cheaper and there probably weren't so many hairdressers around as there are today. Did your mum or dad carry out a home haircut on you when you were little?

Hello, I am so glad to see you back. I do not think that my mom ever cut my hair. I remember that I had long hair when I started to go to school. Mom brought me with her to the hairdresser when I was about 7 years old.

Hey Anna, good to see you too! I wish my mum had let my hair grow long but she always fancied herself as a hairdresser!

@sprite1950 I liked my long hair, I think to remember she asked her hairdresser to cut it when it was time to have the First Communion.

The Beatles hair was considered to be outrageous at the time but became very fashionable. It was quite gimmicky because although they wore smart suits their hair was considered to be long! My dad thought it was terrible lol.

@MNRFOLEY Lots of people grew their hair like it. I had a Joanna Lumley haircut which was similar and very trendy at the time.

My mother can do everything, she's a nimble person before gallstone surgery.

@sprite1950 Thank you, after the gallstones were removed for only about 3 weeks my mother began to feel tired quickly and since then my mother was just pacing around the house.

I'm sorry to hear she has had gallstone surgery. I know gallstones are very painful.

I think my mom may have done it a couple of times, but I mostly remember going to shops. Most of the time it was a beauty college though. It was always cheaper. I can't say I got any better a cut going to a shop where I was essentially a guinea pig.

@porwest Lol I think we've all had a few disasters from time to time. I remember having the most terrible perm and all my friends told me how terrible it looked. I cried for weeks.

@sprite1950 At one point they made me a laughingstock. I wanted a spike and wound up with an Eddie Haskel perm.

@sprite1950 realizing it now, what my mother did to my hair then was very crude lol. using ordinary scissors and cutting hair at once not checking if it balances with the other side lol.

My mother used to cut my hair. Sometimes I wasn't that happy with the result, because I found it too short, but I think she was quite good at it. She was better than me anyway. I once tried to cut my own hair, and it looked terrible

Lol I did that a few times too! I can do it quite well now though as I've got used to the way it grows. I have wavy hair so have to be careful.

@sprite1950 OH that picture is so CUTE!!!! I can't really remember if my mum used to. I know my nan did a few times. I did hear that my mum cut my brother's hair once and apparently he ended up looking like Moe from The Three Stooges.

I don't really remember having it done but when I see photos of myself when I was little I can see she did because a hairdresser would never have cut it that way.
