Cattle in the Frosty Meadow

Norwich, England

We had the first slight frost of the autumn the other morning. Although I know it heralds the long, cold winter days but there's something quite special about the first frost. I managed to catch these beautiful, gentle creatures grazing quietly trying to find a blade of grass or two that didn't resemble an ice lolly! Sadly, Hillside Animal Sanctuary no longer rents this land so these poor gentle souls will be going to slaughter probably before we get to November. Thankfully I won't be eating them as I don't eat meat or dairy!

@olliesmom That is a beautiful photo. How sad to think of them no longer being there.

@olliesmum It is such a shame that they have no idea what kindness could mean to them.

It's like a factory conveyor belt. They're put on the meadow for about three months, then they disappear only to be replaced by another small herd. It's because I fell in love with the cattle that grazed there last year and for several years before that who were owned by a local animal sanctuary, that I decided I could no longer eat meat or dairy. The sanctuary animals used to return year after year and always recognised me as a friend. As soon as they'd been placed in the meadow they'd gallop across to say hello. The poor things you see in the photo don't even seem to recognise that humans can be kind - they keep their distance.

@HazySue I won't give up. I'll be there for them right up until the day they go to the slaughterhouse.

What a beautiful, scene. Would love to have frost here. Hate to hear about the slaughter.

I just console myself with the fact that I'm not going to be eating them!

It must be cold eating frosted grass. We only get a few frosts each year.

I've named myself a pescevegan! I don't eat meat or dairy but I do eat fish from time to time provided it's not farmed.
