Actor or actress

We know an actor is a performer and an actress is a lady performer. In modern days, we can see actresses being referred as actor in the media as if the term is gender neutral. But this did not stop the debate. Now I can see some actors(I mean lady) want to be referred to as an actress again. I can't understand what was wrong with the word actress before or does it have a sexist connotation. What's your stand on this case? Is it truly worth it or is it creating more confusion.

I'm not sure what was wrong with having both names then I know if they are talking about a male or female. I guess another thing I am old school about, I still use actor and actress.

I think, it was always actor and actress when i started reading books already. But anyway, i find it nice this way because you can easily distinguish the gender when they say actress or actor.

@Sojourn Actually, it that way to distinguish the gender at once. It never entered my mind that others think of it as a sexist.

It should be like that only...to distinguish gender and no other sexist reasons.

I was married to an actress for 20 years. She considered herself an actor. An actor is one who acts. The term is delineated into 'actor' and 'actress' for the sake of awarding prizes and designating the gender of a specific role in a play or movie. She was very adamant about the term actor applying to all who act regardless of their gender. Being married to her for 20 years I became inculcated to her terminology. Writers are known as either writers or authors, not writeresses or authoresses. This need to separate women with different terminology is an archaic remnant of patriarchal thinking. It's time to move beyond that. Just my opinion. I really don't care that much, knowing how hard it is for people to change.

I prefer actor and actress. Some people are carrying this sexist nonsense too far.

the name actress would tell audience members easily that the show, film, play, etc has roles for women

Well the only thing that I see is that it should be actress for female. That is according to grammar not about any sexist matter.

I see no reason why they should be referred as "actors" there is a word to correctly define them, they are actress.

It doesn't worry me but it worries me if I use the wrong term around someone who is worried about such trifles.

Me neither. But I wonder which one I will choose if I happen to talk to an actress in real life.

If we look into Grammar, there is no gender for profession and acting is one of them . We do not have teacher-teacheress, doctor-doctoress etc. So people feel that actress is not grammatically correct one.

@Sojourn But we don't add that to other peofession as such. Yes sometimes informally we say lady doctor or lady lawyer.

Yes, from that angle its right. It does not follow the pattern. Maybe rather than generalising both genders as an actor, we might call lady actor.
