Osteoporosis

I have osteoporosis. I've been taking calcium with vit D for over ten years. During the last four years I have also taken alendronate sodium that was prescribed for my brittle bones. I recently had a bone density scan done and it showed no change in my bones, which meant that it wasn't working. I am now off the alendronate. My doctor suggested a once a year infusion of Reclast for the brittle bones. I have already gotten approval from health insurance. This treatment is dependent on different blood tests results. All tests came back ok except for one. My calcium level is way below where it should be. That was a shock because of the number of years I have been taking the calcium supplements. The calcium I have been taking is calcium carbonate. The doctor wants me to switch to calcium citrate and blood test in three weeks to see if it's working. Then we can set an appointment for the infusion. I knew there were different forms of calcium, but didn't know one was more bioavailable than another.

I should go and check my aching bones soon. It is not the first time I do and all the time the doctors give me some med. I don´t believe in them any longer. Old is old.

Wow! I’m sorry you are going through all this. I take calcium citrate (just looked at the bottle) by pure chance as a supplement. I had a body scan years ago and am fine so far. Wishing you the best of luck with your new treatments.
