In 1906, people wanting to listen to music merely had to dial into the Telharmonium, Subscribers to the service merely had to pick up their phone and ask the operator to connect them to the Telharmonium, which was located in a building off of Broadway. The floor that the Telharmoium was located was called "Telharmonium Hall" and comprised of 200 tons of machinery that made the music possible. Despite all the machinery, real musicians were still required to play the music that would flow through the machinery and into the homes, restaurants and businesses of New Yorkers. Would you have subscribed to this service? You can read more here : Subscribers would affix a paper funnel to their receiver as to amplify the music.

Didn't they have radios? If they did, I would just listen to music on the radio.

I think this was only for New Yorkers, and probably only for the "upper crust". I also am not sure about the radio, but I think they had gramophones.

@simone10 Apparently radio signals were invented in 1895. Now when it developed into music, I don't know.

I probably would not want to listen to music over the phone; but then it probably was the only way to get good music.

Yes, I am sure the quality was not the best, but they worked with what they had.

I think it was an awesome invention for it's time. I am glad that we can play music through the radio, our phones and our t.v.s if we want.
