Coronavirus Chronicles

Over here in the UK it's Mothering Sunday and normally our village would be packed with cars as children and grandchildren come to visit their mothers and grandmothers. However, despite the weather being gorgeous and sunny, the village is dead. I've seen three cars leave our road and a family of four out on a walk but, other than that, haven't seen a soul all day. I sent my mother some flowers and a box of chocolates to the care home where she lives - she has dementia but, having phoned my sister this morning, she informed me that the home is in lock down to ensure the elderly residents are kept safe. Whilst talking to my sister I mentioned the fact that not only was I having problems getting food for Adam and me but cat food was also in short supply. She said that she hadn't noticed but then went on to say that she fed her cat on tinned tuna and Sheba or Gourmet cat food. A one meal serving of Sheba or Gourmet costs more than a large tin of the cat food I buy ... and the food I buy isn't the cheapest! Her Juan obviously had a great life!!! Yes, Juan is an odd name for a cat. His real name was Felix - a rescued cat - and my nephew decided it wasn't right so changed it to Juan. I would have expected a school boy to come up with a weird name but my nephew is 21, 6 ft tall and quite muscly!!!. Having looked at the news this morning I discovered that despite the government telling people not to go to pubs, clubs, restaurants, cinemas etc, in the major cities people are still carrying on. In London, because the streets were quieter, apparently a lot of younger people were racing their super powerful cars around the city streets. What will it take for people to actually pay attention to what the government and the health service are telling them. It seems that yesterday another 1000 new people were added to those who already have the virus an Boris Johnson is sending out over a million letters to people classed as vulnerable telling them to stay indoors and food packages will probably be delivered to them. It's now also getting to the stage where the government are thinking about bringing in the forces. That reminds me of when I lived in the village of Coltishall when I was growing up - about 4 miles up the road from where I live now - and I used to get so annoyed that we were never snowed in and had to continue going to school although most of my class mates didn't. We had an RAF camp just outside the village and, bless their little hearts, they used to come through with the snow ploughs! Strangely though, when I left school I was glad that RAF Coltishall was there as it's where I met Adam!

Many are still not taking this seriously but they might take notice soon as numbers of those infected are climbing every day.

We've now shut down pubs, restaurants etc. We live in an area that has a National Park and has a wonderful olde worlde feel about it and unfortunately Londoners have decided they want to buy up a lot of our cottages as holiday homes. These idiots have been working in the worst infected city in the UK and now that it's come to self isolation decided they're going to come up to Norfolk and stay in their holiday homes. Boris Johnson has told people to stay away but nobody's listening.

@olliesmum It's so annoying and awful that these people are now descending en masse to your area.

@JudyEv We're supposed to be getting a really long high speed railway link from London right up to the north of England. However, the northerners have seen what's happened to southern areas that used to be quiet and full of local people and are now saying they don't want to be connected. The properties up there are valued at less than half the ones down south. It could put property prices way out of native northerners' reach.

Many places are closed here as well. Schools, nursing homes, businesses. Please stay safe.

We went to our local Farmer's Market in Market Bosworth (Leicestershire) this morning and were surprised how quiet it was. There was plenty of room in the small local car park and no queues for any of the stalls. However, the man on the dog food stall said that he had been busy earlier in the morning - we wondered if people had anticipated a large turnout of the "panic buying" variety and then gone home, thus making the panic a short and minor one. Stay safe!
