How Are You My Darlings

No, I have not lost it or flipped out that last screw. I have been writing up a storm though and other thoughts have gone through my mind. The heading refers to a memory from my childhood. The Latvian school I attended on Saturdays often had us children performing plays. The school was in the basement of a church Latvians rented from a Norwegian society. It was a lovely church and the basement was a great place to set up classrooms for Latvian children to learn the language and all about Latvia including history and geography. Anyway, there was a small platform that could be used as a stage for some performances but Latvians did it in grandiose ways instead. In those days which was the 1960s, Manhattan in New York City had many different halls that could be rented. One such hall was The Arlington Hall. It was huge and the stage seemed a million miles high to a little child like me but we had to climb up there and give our performances. One play was about a family with two little children and all the mischief they could get up to. It was a simple comedy for us children to play. I got the role of the ditzy auntie of these children. They had me in some garish colorful clothes and as I made my grand stage entrance to calm the excited children I had to shout, “ How are you my darlings?” and that line and my performance popped for some reason into my head today so I thought it would do as the heading for this post. I do feel a bit ditzy with all I am trying to do but at least I keep busy and out of trouble and I have not set foot out of my house now for at least two weeks. Apparently the church the Latvians rented is now closed and renovating but I found a photo of it and how well I remember it was such a majestic and beautiful church.

"out of trouble " and I want to get in trouble an Isolation is not good for that purpose!! From the age of 7--when I went to the original production of "Oklahoma" --I went to the theatre to see kids like you shouting, How are you my darlings?"

It certainly looks a lovely church. It's funny how phrases pop into our minds seemingly for no reason.

We feel good anyway when you want to address us darling. That's a sweet word we could ever receive from a person who endears us so much.
