2pe+3p=78 3pe+2p=72 multiply first by 2 4pe+6p=156 multiply second by 3 9pe+6p=216 sub 1 from 2 5pe=60 pe=12 so one pencil is 12 cents sub in 2 48+6p=156 6p=108 p=18-- pen costs 18 cents
