Kids being left in cars

I was in a store the other day and when I came out I saw 2 kids around 8-9 sitting a the van next to mine. I waited for the parent to come back for over 30 minutes. When I spoke to the mother she said that they are old enough to care for themselves. I disagree. If someone really wanted those children nothing would have stopped them from taking them. What chance does an 8 year old have against an adult. How old is old enough to leave your kids in the car, specificly in a large city.

Its an insane act of the parents. If they want their kids to be left in the cars riskying their lives, then better thing would be leaving them at home itself. The kids should be given the right exposure of the world so that they must be able to grow in the right frame of mind. If such act is seen by you then as a responsible citizen, you may report it to the child abuse department or call 911.

Isn't that against the law? I know it is where I live. You can be arrested for leaving your kids unattended in a vehicle. Very sad.

16 is old enough LOL! Ok I am exaggerating but with all the kidnappings you would think that parents would be more cautious. There's no reason why a kid can't go with you no matter how much of a headache they may cause you.

I agree I used to go shopping with my then new born and the 2 boys I babysat and even though they could drive me crazy I would never have left them alon. Their father is a different story. I really disliked that man.

I have since learned that even if the children are of legal age to be left if the cops think that the situation was not good they will act on it.

As far as I know, it is against the law here in the US or at least in most states. My only thoughts on the matter are how irresponsible and uncaring those parents are. It makes me sick. The parent's obviously don't love their kids. I think once your child is in their teens it might be a different story, they are smarter then and bigger too, but even then some situations are questionable.

It is against the law. 12 is the average are by law. The officers reserve the right to make a judgment call if need be. Even most teens don't know how to fight off attackers.

Yes, I agree. I don't care if people don't want to hear my son crying, I will not leave him alone. I can't understand parents doing that.

There is really sad things that happen in this world to kids and even our pets. I see kids in cars being left and the hot sun beating down on the windshield..I have called the police several times from walmart. I saw one lady in walmart when her little boy acted up she spanked him hard and told him to go get in the car that he wasn't getting the toy. I told the associate and she watched her and the police arrived. The liitle boy did what the mom said, police found the car he was sitting in crying. Very sad. Pets are the same I see them in cars and panting for air. Why people do this is beyond me.

A lady I used to stend time with used to send her daughter to the car all the time and it really bugged me. I used to think but what if someone came along.

It is bad to leave the kids in the car. Atleast untill the age of 14 or 15 they shoudl take care of their children.

yes it is against the law, and you can have your kids taken away if you leave them when the car is not on also... i think perhaps late middle school is appropriate for leaving kids... but it kinda depends on the kid

kids that age are not "old enough" to be left alone anywhere..true they can look after themselves but they're still young and they wouldnt know the first thing to do in an emergency..and a lot can happen even in a span of a few minutes..sorry but for me this is irresponsible parenting

I DONT THINK ANY PARENT OR GUADIAN SHOULD LEAVE ANY AGE CHILD IN THE CAR ALONE .CARS GET SO HOT SO FAST AND U NEVER NO WHO MIGHT COME BY AND DECIDE TO TAKE ONE. IF IT WAS ME I WOULD OF CALLED AND REPORTED IT TO THE LAW. THATS JUST ME THOUGH, I WISH I COULD JUST SPEND TIME WALKING PARKING LOTS FOR PEOPLE THAT LEAVE THERE CHILDREN IN CARS. I FILL LIKE IF THE LAW INFORCEMENTS DID THIS AS WELL OR SOMEONE DID THIS IT WOULD SAVE KIDS LIVES THAT ARE LEFT OUT IN A HOT CAR TO DEFEND FOR THERESELF. I HATE HEARING OF CASES OF CHILDREN DYING DUE TO BEING LEFT IN THE HOT CARS. JUST MAKES ME SO MAD!!!

yeah well people like that don't deserve children.. I have two boys aged 2 and 5 and I never ever leave them in the car not even for a second ... Even if they are asleep I will wake them up to take them in to the shop. Its a very very scary world out there now and I'm not going to risk it .. i could never ever live with myself if something happened so I'm not ever going to take any chances.. People are just stupid and I'm glad to see that a lot of people hang around to say something to these awful parents about what they are doing. I agree that even teenagers shouldn't be left in a car alone unless its just for a few seconds and you have the car locked. I hate that our would is like it is where we have to worry that some freak will harm our kids but that's how it is and I think that its only going to get worse... Thank God for people like yourself saying something to these idiots hopefully that women might actually think about it before she leaves her kids in a car alone again for that long... that's way to long to have kids left alone I remember being a kid I could have got into sooo much trouble sitting in a car for 30 minutes..

I will never leave my kids in the car by themselves until they are over the age of 18. Even then I will still be nervous about it but I guess I will have to let go sometime. Just because a child may be a little bit older dosen't mean something won't happen. Teenagers are kidnapped everyday. I have seen parents leave there kids in the car several times at the gas station by my home. But most of the time they are really young like between 6 months to 5 years and almost all the time it is a mother by herself that does it. The fact is that those parents are just to damn lazy to tend to them.

Ok.... I don't see how you can think that but I will say this if something happens to your kids are you going to be on the news crying for them. Well you don't have the right to be if you are leaving them alone in an unsafe position. The laws in almost every state and province says 12, even then a 12 year old can't fight off a full grown man. It's unfortunate that parents like you feel that your 8 year old is old enough to be alone, maybe not so many children would get hurt if more people like me stood up to you and told you no this is wrong.

I think parents who leave their children in the car are just irresponsible. I would never leave my kids in the car no matter how old they are. Who knows what could have happened to them. A pedofile could have seen them and kidnapped them or something (i know i went to an extreme, but it could happen).....makes me wonder what some people WON"T do.

The terrible thing is that people get away with a lot worse then this so really nobody is going to jail a parent for it. I looked after 2 boys whos father locks them in their room for hours on end. They lived in a tent for 3 months. The oldest lost his ball cap and was so afraid of what his father would do that I spend 3 hours looking for it. The kids are in a bad home and I can't do anything because the system won't step in to help them.

I know what you mean. I always think the worst. I just can't believe that parents don't think about things like this. I just wonder if it even crossed her mind or if she just didn't even care.

I think it should be considered a form of child abuse and the parents that do it should be put in jail.

I yelled at my husband for leaving our kids in the car alone. He said that he was in a store where there was all windows and he could see the car at all times. I told him if some one really wanted his car or our kids all they had to do was take the car, and he would not have any time to save them. I told my 7yr old to let me know everytime they go with him to let me know if he keeps them on the car or takes them in with hime cause if he does it again I will never let him take the kids again untill they are old enough to be in the car alone.

I don't blame you at all for that. I would have been seriously angry with my husband too. You are very right in your reaction. Thanks for sharing your story with us.
