We can sing!

The second "provisional results" for music, drama, and dance came out for music educators today. Until now, we were told we weren't allowed to have the students sing. But this study shows that if students (and teacher) wear masks and stand 6 feet apart that it will be all right to sing for 30 minutes, after which you need to go out of the room and allow the air to do one complete change, blowing their aerosol out of the room before the next ones come in. We still aren't allowed to play recorder. They are going to test recorder and children's singing and those results should be out by November. At the moment, children will be abiding by the same rule as older singers, although they think that children don't sing as loud so might not produce as much aerosol. Band instruments will be "masked". The player will wear a mask with a slit in it to put the mouthpiece through. Flutes have a different thing called a WinDefender that keeps the aerosol from spreading. The end of each instrument (the bell on a brass instrument for example) needs to have two layers of cloth covering it. I'm very excited because this means we can do both band and choir at school! Our periods are 75 minutes. I'm now trying to figure out how to clear out the room between two 30-minute singing sessions. Is there a lot of study of other disciplines and they way they spread aerosols, I wonder?

It would look corny for a singer to be wearing face mask. But that may be the only solution for now.

We gotta do what we gotta do, if we want to sing together at all, and not kill anyone by accident.

So do I. We just got notification from the head of school that we have to wear face masks and face shields when singing (that's fine). But it was ok with just masks. I guess we need to be super safe.

You can't wear just a face shield because all your breath goes around it. You need both mask and face shield, or just mask. I like the idea of a face shield to protect my eyes.
