Does your house have a chimney?

Chimney is not a common thing in the Philippines. But there is a house next to our apartment complex with a chimney. Every morning and late afternoon, when I drink coffee or chocolate, I stare at it. I like the view of it when it emits smoke. Do you still have it in your house?

As we have a real fireplace, of course we have a chimney to exhaust the smoke.

Our house is more than 100 years old and it is on the site of a former coalfield. When it was built every room had a fireplace and a chimney to go with it so that there could be coal fires burning throughout the house. We have done quite a lot of work on the house, including removing some unwanted and unused chimneys. We only use one now - for the wood-burning stove in the main room.

@Janet357 It's not that old - as you can tell from the fact that our street is New Street! The village has been here for at least 1000 years - but you won't find any houses here that are as old as that! It's brick-built with a slate roof. We had the back of the house rebuilt and extended about five years ago, but we were able to use the original bricks, all of which were made locally.

We have a fireplace and a chimney, but we don't use our fireplace. It is in a room that we don't use much. We have no comfortable furniture or lamps in that room, so we spend most of our time in the living room.

We do have chimneys. I live in the Midwest, and our winters do get cold and brutal. I am not a big fan of using these though, because there are times that smoke gets inside the house when the wind blows in certain direction. Or maybe ours need some much-needed servicing. Whatever the case may be, I just always end up using the fireplace as a decorating medium.

Oh, thanks for this additional knowledge you shared with me. I thought chimney was for releasing smoke so you meant fireplace and chimney have the same function?
