Question For Today: Purchases That You Wish You Never Made

I've made some wasteful purchases over the years not all of them my fault. What are some purchases you wish you reconsidered? Here are a few of mine... DVD'S- with online streaming from Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix these purchases are no longer needed. Watching movies have become so easy now. Just ask Blockbuster! Oh well, as long as my DVD player (another obsolete item) still works I can still use them. CASSETTE TAPES- same thing as the DVD's. You can download music from popular sites now. Unless you still own a cassette player that works those tapes are worthless. Thankfully I still do, COLLECTIBLES- I've gotten a few over the years only to find out they are not going to make me rich. Baseball trading cards from the 1980's-90's, Norman Rockwell plates, life magazines, old vinyl records, sports yearbooks and a Trivial Pursuit game are some items without buyers. EXTENDED WARRANTIES- appliances and cars always offer them. You should look to see if the manufacturer offers a limited warranty. When I bought a washer and dryer from Sears I got an extended warranty . More than 10 years later they are still going strong. LOTTERY TICKETS- still waiting for my million dollars! NEWSPAPER- I got a Sunday paper for years. And having to tip the delivery person adds up over time. I thought I would miss getting the paper but I find plenty of news to read online or watching on TV. And digital coupons are offered in online store sites that I shop at so I still find good shopping deals. I'm sure there are many other items I have bought that I don't use and became a waste of money. Now it's your turn to share your purchases, Source idea- Money Talks Photo- passionforsavings.com

Well, if you think back to when you bought those DVDs or cassettes they really were worth it in an entertainment frame of mind. Same for those old VCR players or BluRay players. It's just the nature of the game. That old 8 track I had in my old car is now obsolete and who the heck uses those DVD players some cars have? Technology changes so fast it's hard not to waste money now and again.

Very true! Guess we just have to update our technology to the newest items. But what a shame! Especially if the item still works fine Here are some other wasteful purchases: Digital Camera, Gym Membership, and Cookbooks.

Ok, I have to disagree with digital camera @dgobucks226 I much prefer my camera to my cell phone cuz my camera gives me 24mega pixel shots that few cell phones can match.

@dgobucks226 I have some cookbooks and there are some recipes that I like. But my kids like to cook. They print out recipes they want to cook and then I put the papers in a folder so they can use the same recipe again another time.

I have many of the same. I have been playing the same numbers in the lottery since 1989. I don't dare stop now! :-)

Yes, if you don't play you can't win. I wonder how much money you've spent over the years? Here are some other wasteful purchases: An extravagant wedding, GPS, and Timeshare.

Did you ever win? The lottery is a way for the government to get people to pay something and not get anything in return.

Yes, absolutely true. Technology has made many items obsolete. I have an old TV that works but doesn't have a hookup for HD-TV.

I got an extended warranty on the washing machine and it was for 10 years, but at 8 years I needed servicing of the washing machine and the company had gone bankrupt! What a waste of money!!

Your washing machine lasted longer than the company! That's really unlucky. If a product is not going to last awhile it's not worth buying. Some of those extended warranties are definitely a waste. Thanks for your response and here are some other wasteful purchases: An extravagant wedding, GPS, and Timeshare.

@lifecoachjerusalem I agree with your sentiments about weddings. Simple and tasteful beats extravagant and excessive anytime in my view.

@dgobucks226 I told my husband that I will not pay for a fancy wedding for the kids. It is a waste to go into debt only for a "party ". If I did have lots of money and I wanted to give it to my children who want to get married I would offer to pay the first month of apartment rent instead. (Small 2 room apartment)

The thing I can think of that was a major disappointment for me, especially considering the price, was an iRobot. No, not the Alan Parsons Project album. The “Roomba,” the round supposed “automatic” vacuum cleaner. It doesn’t work that well, it’s very difficult to clean (no “take the bag out and throw it away” simplicity), and it banged against the furniture instead of “sensing” it and turning. It didn’t follow any kind of grid pattern, either. BIG $200 mistake. (I love this song, so buying I Robot wouldn’t have been a mistake!)
Track 4 off of Alan Parsons Project "I Robot" album

Through the years I have collected and bought very many videotapes and I am glad I have a video player to watch them on. Then I have a bunch of DVDs that I got because my desktop PC has a DVD player and now I am waiting for it to get fixed so I can play those as well. Oh, yes my biggest purchase was the entire DVD series of ER and I have already watched them 3 times and want to do more. I have Amazon Prime but I do not like to watch movies through them because I have to pay I only use Prime for my purchases that I make,

ER is a great series and worthwhile purchase. I really enjoyed that series! I think DVD's are going to stay around for awhile. Sounds like you have no purchases you regret, that's good... Here are some other wasteful purchases that were named: An extravagant wedding, GPS, and Timeshare.
