Rant: Selfish solutions.

Here's an example of something I can not understand. The first solution to a problem some people come up with, is the selfish solution, when the fact of the matter is, there is another solution that is both simple and fair to all. I'll give you a specific example that happened just now in my store. A customer came by the other day, Oct. 26, and bought prepaid celphone loads and a stick of cigarette. After I've successfully loaded all loads, and after she has placed the cigarette in her mouth, she realized that the money she brought is short of 3 pesos. I generally do not allow that but there is nothing she bought that I can take back anymore. I would normally demand that she go home, get the balance, and come back right away to pay. Because that is what I would do if our positions were reversed. I would not even make her wait more than 5 minutes before I pay her in full. But fine, fine. I listed down what she owes and told myself I'll see how long it will take for her to come back. I did not expect her to come back later in that day. And she's not a daily customer either. Today, Oct. 28, 2 days later, she comes back and buys stuff again. (1 food stuff at P14, 6 candies at P1 each, and 3 sticks of cigarette at P5 each) I would at least give her credit for reminding me that she owes me P3, because to be honest, I forgot. However, what she said at first was this, translated: "Oh, I still owe you, right? I forgot to bring extra money, so I'll pay you next time, ok?" I was trying so hard to stop myself from exploding in anger that I was shaking. I told her this, this is the reason why I do not allow incomplete payments - because it becomes a non-priority for the customer. They push it off, and push it off, and push it off... as if the seller does not have any right to be paid properly? So I put my foot down and told her this is what we'll do. I'll get the P3 you owe me now. And you'll only buy 2 sticks of cigarette, instead of 3. I just don't understand how I'm the one who has to come up with this solution when she is also, I believe, an intelligent adult and should have been able to come up with this solution herself. But see, selfish solutions. Apparently, it is more important that she gets all the things she wants to buy now, but the seller (me) has to wait (further) for payment that I should have been given two days before. I just can't understand how some people think that way... Sorry for subjecting you all to this rant but... what do you think? Are you the type who would have come up with the same selfish solution she had? Or would you have volunteered to cancel 1 cigarette or 3 candies just so you'd be able to pay off the debt already?

I would've put my foot down, depending on what it was. If a person was short a penny or two, most of the time, I'd let it slide. Hell, when my husband pays in cash at one of the 7-Eleven's he frequents, the cashiers don't even want the penny. Now, I don't know what a paso is worth, but if it's equelvent to an entire dollar and she was short 3, then yeah, I'd be upset too. That's just not right. To be honest, I would've told her day one, if you don't have enough, put an item back.

Your solution is the only sensible one and the customer should have realised that.

That is horrible that she tried to do that again. I am glad you refused to let her do it again. I can't understand how people can be that way either. I would have been so embarrassed if I was her and run right home to get the money as well.

I am glad you insisted on payment. I agree it was her responsibility. Annoying.

@moirai I can understand why you were angry. She thought she could pull a fast one on you. Good for you for standing up to her and making sure you got what she owed you. I hope others see what she is doing and will not stand for it too.

I am sorry you had to deal with this. Some people are very irresponsible and I know it is very angering. I hope this worked out for you. Some will never change do not want to pay debts.

Oh gosh, people like that makes me want to strangle them. It's just little amount of money, but the attitude,so selfish, don't care about other people!!!! People (especially adults) should be responsible. You will go bankrupt of you get a lot of customer like that.
