You have a problem, but don't want the solution? Where is the sense in that?

I simply cannot get my head around the fact that there are people in this world who have no intention of taking the Covid-19 vaccine when it is is offered to them. Surely that makes absolutely no sense! The world has had a serious problem for the best part of a year. It has devastated populations and caused massive economic damage, as well as killing hundreds of thousands of people, putting enormous strain on hospitals and health services and putting millions of people out of work. It has been widely recognised throughout that the only long-term solution to the problem of Covid-19 is to develop vaccines that will give enough people immunity to make its spread controllable. That means that a large enough proportion of the population must be given the vaccine when it is available. And now the vaccines are coming on stream! The work that has been done to develop the vaccines has been incredible - usually these things take years, but the genius of many scientists and technicians in the field has been put to work, massive testing programmes have been carried out, and approvals have been given for several vaccines. There is therefore no excuse for anyone not taking up the offer of a vaccine shot - apart from the very small proportion of the population with specific medical conditions that make this inadvisable. And yet there are apparently thousands of people who will refuse to do so! Why? I cannot think of any sane reason for refusing. As I said in my question - you want the problem solved, so why not do the one thing that does precisely want you want, i.e. solves the problem? Do you really want the problem to continue, with all the continuing misery that that would entail?

@indexer Perhaps Spain has the right idea in recording vaccine refusers. We should all be clamouring for immunisation. My brother says drinking whisky kills the virus because he wants an excuse to drink whisky (lots of) with impunity.

Everyone wants this Covid19 problem solved but they are also right to question any vaccine being offered especially since the genesis of the Covid is yet to be established. Remember it's not like Ebola which comes from eating wild animals... rumours of the Covid being engineered in some lab some where just makes anything associated with it suspicious.

That's it - rumours. You need to provide evidence for nonsense like that, apart from which a virus is a virus, however it has come into being. The experts understand its structure and therefore how to develop vaccines to deal with it.

@FionaRubi Global pandemics are the result of viruses getting out of control. That is what happened with the flu epidemic after World War I and it is what is happening now. How do you know the vaccines are not foolproof? Masses of testing has been done, to the satisfaction of health authorities in many countries across the world. What is not known is how long immunity will last - and that would be the case whatever vaccine was produced. Only time will confirm whether booster doses will be needed and how often. The origin of the virus is immaterial. The structure of the virus is what counts, and the experts have very clear ideas about that.

@indexer A virus is not just a virus...if that was the case, the Covid 19 would not have been declared a global pandemic. You contradict yourself because these experts still haven't developed a foolproof vaccine and I guarantee it is because the origin of the virus is still unknown. How do you develop a vaccine for a virus you have no clue about?

People are suspicious of the vaccine. People are getting sick after taking it. We don't know what is in it. Worst of all, you take the vaccine and can still get the disease, can still spread it, and still have to mask and distance. That sounds like it is not that effective and there is some other purpose for mandated vaccination.

It is a regular feature of vaccines - not just the Covid-19 one - that you can have a reaction to it shortly after being given it. This is simply your body getting used to having some unexpected chemicals floating round the bloodstream, and nothing to be worried about. All vaccines have to go through a long programme of testing before approval, such that all side-effects are known about and there is absolutely no danger of the actual disease being introduced - this is also due to the fact that modern vaccines do not include "live" viruses. Yes, it is still possible for people to develop Covid-19 after vaccination. That is because you can be infected without showing any symptoms, and a vaccination after that infection will have no effect on how the disease progresses. This does not mean that the vaccine does not work on people who have not already been infected. No vaccine is 100% effective anyway - there will always be a small percentage of people for whom it provides no protection. That applies to any disease you might care to name, and is no reason for refusing to be vaccinated. The main purpose of vaccination is to reduce the spread of a disease. It may not eliminate it completely, but any reduction is surely beneficial, and the more people that you vaccinate, the greater the overall effect will be.

I often used to wonder why and how great civilisations of the past fell apart and faded into obscurity. Now I think I am starting to understand. Many 'western' countries currently have a good standard of living, great technologies, efficient transport, educational opportunities, high employment, good healthcare, and new inventions and technological advances are appearing all the time. And yet these same countries have a growing proportion of the population who deny that the Earth is a sphere, who actively campaign against the greatest advance in healthcare ever made, and in other ways try their best to drag us all backwards. Maybe it is human nature to shoot ourselves in the foot? I get the feeling that our civilisation is on the way out.

We are programmed to believe myths - we have done it all down the ages, hence the invention of religion among other things. It is hard-wired into our psychologies. What has changed is our willingness to adopt new myths while not always abandoning the old ones.
