I feel like this is happening more and more lately and I had a bad one today. I did not say "welcome aboard" but basically assumed a person I saw today at work was a new hire and started giving her some details she very well knew. Of course she was quick to inform me that she has worked at our company for almost ten years, and I felt like a complete idiot. It is not the biggest of companies, and people have been in and out due to working from home due to the pandemic, but man it was still a red-faced moment. She was super nice and I blamed in on COVID, but the truth is most of the time I just have my head down at work and could probably not recognize many people there. I think I will just assume that people have been there for a while, as to not make an idiot out of myself.

That is OK at least you treated the person in a nice way.

I would probably try to make a joke and said it's 'welcome abroad for this year as it's just beginning' I can understand the embarrassment here. I am bad at remembering names and faces too

Some people have problems remembering faces. Maybe you're one of them.
