Writing my Will for Indians to inherit

I took that COVID vaccination. So I could die.. Given my precarious situation, I thought it befitting to leave my fellow Indians some inheritance. Basically, it is just a thought. So when a woman becomes a widow, how is it easy to wipe out all love that she bestowed on us? How do we become insensitive to her pain and loss? I believe in ancient times, there may have been a widow, who may have gone into a massive shock following the demise of her husband. To bring her out from that shocked state in which she refused to accept the reality, our ancestors may have resorted to cruel techniques. But not every widow goes through that. Why must we wipe out her vermillion on her face with palm - who gives us the right to touch her? Why must we break her bangles? Why must we periodically remind her at every marriage or function that she is a widow, whether she was widowed in twenties or in seventies? Are we "thinking" women? Are we sensitive women? Can that fate not befall us? What values do we pass down to next generations? Be capable of switching off your emotions? For those who still do not understand what the state of shock is, please read "Home they brought her warrior dead" by Tennyson. There are plenty of YouTube links on it. If you can, next time, please stand up against that cruelty. It is, after all, your mother, your sister, your daughter, or wife who goes through such social stigma. We cannot be this cruel. Does not become us.

What caught my attention was the statement that you took the Covid vaccine, so you could die. I took it so I could live and not die. So did I miss something here?

It is always nice to a person who is suffering through a loss.

All the more reason to be nice. If a person suffers an accident do we not sympathize and move in to help? Why widows are singled out?

I hope that one day your country will learn to respect women. A widow needs sympathy, it's hard enough to lose someone you loved, you do not need this kind of cruelty.

Such traditions are cruel, yet they existed in many societies for hundreds of years and still do in some places. I wonder why they originated?

We only recognize physical cruelty. Why is it that we do not give recognition to mental cruelty and punish for it?

@Fleura It is a pathetic culture or tradition. It reduces a human being into ridiculing species. Better than thou. As if they know their spouses are not gonna die before them. Nothing holy about it. I cannot understand a culture that used to treat every other woman other than wife, young and old, as Mother..irrespective of whether she was or not, can come to this stage where women are raped, and where women are ridiculed when they are already in pain. How can god forgive such folks?

@vandana7 In situations like this, often because it is considered 'culture' and 'tradition' and therefore should be protected!

I hope things will change. I didn't know it was so difficult for widows over there. Everyone should be allowed to grieve their own way (as long as it doesn't hurt anyone in the process, of course). It can take many generations for a change to happen, but I suppose it has to start from the women themselves, teaching the children values of respect and empathy.

I agree. But for that women need to stand up, and there should be encouragement from their spouses and others in the community. After all, everybody has sisters, wives, and daughters.

@vandana7 Yes, that and perhaps something can be done by the entertainment industry too (if they don't mind taking the risk of spreading this kind of message). I don't even mention the government.

No woman should go through what you described as a widow. It's losing her dignity as a woman.

I knew you would understand this Valerie. When human rights activists fight for the right of few prisoners they forget that there are several women going through this torture regularly.
