Have question...

How does one get a birth certificate, if you need a state issuance driver's license? I finally have the money to get my car registered and license in my state. Took me a long time, but I have everything together, including the funds. Now I find out I need a birth certificate from one of two sources. Yet those two sources require a state ID. But I can't get a state ID without a birth certificate. Surely these young people have a way to get it, so I should too...unless they all are getting their parents to request their certificate. What does an elderly woman do to get a current state driver's license? My out of state license is expiring in May. I have an appointment Monday afternoon, now I find this out. I can't even get a passport without a birth certificate. I feel screwed here... Any suggestions?

The department of motor vehicles should have a list of acceptable alternative ID forms on their website. If you have a license that's currently valid, though, that should work. You might just need a current bank statement, utility bill, or something like that for additional proof of address.

The only ones they accept require that you need a birth certificate to get them. I am not military. They accept a passport, but I can't even get one of those without a birth certificate. All the alternatives still leave me screwed. I have everything. But they require the birth certificate too.

@teresatrotter I completely forgot that everything is switching over to the REAL-ID requirements now. If you're comfortable with sharing the state you need the birth certificate from here or in PM I'd be willing to do some digging for you to see if I can come up with anything that helps.

hm, in my house we keep such documents at one place - so my birth certificate is in a wardrobe. here, you go to the municipality building to get the birth certificate. i don't know about there.

I lost all my earthly possessions. Nothing before 2016, exists in my life...which is why I don't have those documents anymore.

I had to go in person to the state of my birth. I was needing that birth certificate for a tribal membership application. When we got it we found that on my birth certificate my last name at birth was misspelled. I had to get a baptismal certificate to get the birth certificate revised. You have a state ID if your license that is expiring is from the state you need the birth certificate from.It may also work in the state where you live now. I know you live in Florida right now, where were you born. Before 9/11 you could call the bureau of vital statistics and pay a fee and get it sent right to you. 9/11 changed all of that.

I have a current out of state license. There has to be some way for me to get one in Florida. How are these young people getting theirs if you can't get a birth certificate unless you have an ID? Something is wrong here. People are getting licenses all the time that move out of state. I am sure not all of them have current birth certificates. Some may have lost them in a fire. What do we do then?

My husband and I had to do the same thing. They don't like copies, so you can usually get one from your local department of records. You just have to fill out some information, and they'll print one for you. You can also check your county health department. Their department of records would be your best bet. I'm in Daytona, so I don't know where it is in Jacksonville.

You have to have a current ID. The only one I have is from Texas. Will they let me use that do you think?
