How do you get a green thumb?

I recently purchased a house. I have lived in apartments all my life. I have a huge front yard and an even bigger backyard. I am excited to plant but not sure if I should do flowers, bushes or fruits and vegetables. Any gardeners here? What is something good for a beginner? I have heard the expression green thumb. Do I have to research different things and when is best to plant them and care for them or should I follow the instructions that come with them? I planted 2 azaleas and a Japanese Pieris in a planter box in my front yard. Wish me luck!

How big is the planter box? Azaleas and Japanese Pieris can all get big! Just because something is small when you buy it doesn't mean it will stay that way. You need to have your soil checked before you begin planting anything. The US is a big country, so not all plants are right for where you live. Just because the green house or Walmart sell something doesn't mean it will grow well in your area.

We planted them about 4 or 6 feet apart and left 4-6 feet from the first and last so they can grow out. I definitely am crossing my fingers that they will grow. I didn't think to check my soil. Thanks for the great advice!

@DaddyEvil yes it goes across the whole front yard near my front door. Nice big space. We had to buy about 12-15 bags of mulch lol made 3 trips to home depot to get more and more.

@zukichucha Wow! That's a big planter! The biggest planters I've ever seen were about six feet by four feet. You're welcome. I hope things work out for you.

I was thinking of growing some herbs and vegetables. I love cooking from scratch and fresh ingredients would be great. I have never grown anything before so this is definitely an adventure for me lol

I think it may be a good idea to spend some money on a gardener at the beginning. One visit may be enough. An expert will see at once what is best for the soil you have. He or she may give you some good pieces of advice where to plant what, which plants need shade, which need full sunshine, etc. Your green thumb will develop over time!

We had someone come out to fertilize the lawn and spray weed killer. But we did not think to ask about asking these questions. Definitely will next time he comes by!

I think you can start planting with plants which are easy to tend to. You can do a research online before you start planting.

Good luck. We have new house and a new garden. It's hard work as it was such a mess.when we moved in. Not ready a gardener either.

Yes it sure is! It looked like our front and backyard was covered in hay. Took all weekend to de-thatch it! Looks much better now. We also filled 10 lawn bags with leaves. It is a lot of work but once we get the hang of it will look beautiful. Good luck!

I don't know much about plants, I think you can find them on the Internet. I hope your plants thrive.

Thank you so much! My mom said she is going to buy me a gardening book for Mother's Day. I can't wait. Researching online has been fun but I would look to see pictures.
